Manila report says three Filipino soldiers were killed and two wounded in a nighttime ambush by Japanese stragglers near Bagabas in Northern Luzon. Two other soldiers are missing as patrols search the jungle region with about 1700 Japanese believed at large.

In rural West Jefferson County a sawmill worker Forrest Hopkins, 40, was killed by two shotgun blasts to the head and his wife Elizabeth Mawkins was critically wounded in a recent farm home incident. The shootings were found when Albert Hawkins, a neighbor, visited for milk and reported a forced entry. The Hawkins brothers had bought a nearby farm yesterday and Hopkins reportedly kept substantial sums of money at the house.

Dorhams company of the Alabama State Guard headquarters and service company has two new commanding officers after Captain Alto V Lee, US, requested inactive duty. Lieutenant Roy O Hill will assume duties as commanding officer until an election is held. The former commander remains in the State Guard Reserve. Brig Gen George L Cleere signed the inactive duty order. The company was organized to replace the National Guard unit of the 1st Infantry Division ordered to active federal status on Nov. 25, 1940.
Iranian troops marching toward Azerbaijan province to quell separatist disturbances were halted near Kagvin by Russian authorities and ordered to withdraw to Tehran. Four battalions and gendarmes, aided by two American advisers from Schwarzkopf’s mission, moved northward. seven people reported killed as communications with Tehran broke down.
