Harvard Teacher Among Few Men Who Know Bomb Secrets
Cambridge Massachusetts UP James Mahony: George Bogdan Kistiakowsky, a wartime explosives expert, helped assemble the first atom bomb and later taught at Harvard. He keeps a $10 bill and a jagged rock as mementos of his role in the atomic age while he pursues a quiet lab life and refuses to dwell on details. Oppenheimer once feared the device would fail and bet ten dollars that it would be a dud. Kistiakowsky kept watch through the night in case of sabotage. The rock, formed from sand by the blast, also serves as a tangible reminder of the event.
