City Employees Oppose City Merit Plan Vote Result

City of Dothan employees voted in a straw ballot on a proposed merit system. Of 210 participants 11 favored including department heads. 4 opposed. Department results varied with main office 5 yes 4 no. police 2 yes 1 no. fire 7 yes 0 no. water electric 1 yes 1 no. Auditor noted no pressure biased the vote.

Inferior Court Bills Advertised By Houston Bar

The Houston County Bar Association promotes two local bills to abolish the Common Pleas Court and create an Inferior Court with countywide jurisdiction. Bills advertised for four weeks could be introduced at the next legislature session. The Inferior Court would handle civil cases up to 1000 dollars, divorce actions, and domestic matters, with a judge elected in 1949 serving six year terms. The governor would appoint Judge J Theodore Jackson until a successor is elected. Regular court sessions would be held on the first and third Mondays each month.

State Tax Collection Ahead Of Last Year

The Alabama Revenue Department reports eight months into the current fiscal year saw collections totaling 51,018,257, up from 42,061,000 the prior year, a gain of 6,967,167. Tobacco and income taxes show notable monthly totals while Bay area collections dip.

Rabid Fox Bites Hog Then Sets Off Area Alarm

In Wiregrass near Headland a rabid fox attacked multiple hogs and a neighbor’s dog on April 14. The victim hog died Friday after exposure. its head was sent to the Dothan Branch Laboratory where rabies was confirmed. The sow later went mad and died Friday after a rampage. Dogs inoculated against rabies remain uninfected. Several dead foxes were found nearby prior to the incident.

Denver Explosion Kills Three at 35 West Dakota Avenue

An apartment building blast in Denver killed three occupants including landlady Mrs. Gertude Rowan and her 11 year old grandson Richard Rowan. At least eight others were injured as debris collapsed walls and the roof. A man identified as M O Breckenridge was recovered with a crushed head.

Wet-Dry Referendum in Houston Set for July 8

Houston County will hold a wet-dry referendum. Probate Judge Albert Logue reported 27 petitions with 1,614 signatures were filed for a local option election. Signature checks stopped when 538 signatures were from voters, surpassing the 507 required. Judge Logue planned to issue the call next week and set July 5 for the vote. Whittaker led the filing. an organization to advocate dry status will form. Since 1935 Houston County has had four local option votes, with the first dry and the last three wet.

Court Directs City to Return Cash Bond in Indecency Case

Mrs. Mary Mitchell who posted 102 dollars as bail after her arrest for public indecency during a Titigaiion event at the Houston County Fair has won a suit against the City of Dothan. The Alabama Supreme Court upheld a Court of Appeals ruling that the city improperly held the bond, and directed return of the bail posted on Oct 28, 1943 plus related claims by Mrs. Maxine Head and Mr. and Mrs. Tezzano. The decision settled that authorities could not retain the money as a fee or without lawful authority.
