Cotton plan for $30 million central agency to market cotton

A six man task force laid groundwork for a $30,000,000 centralized cooperative to finance and move cotton across 15 southern and western states. The plan, approved after two days of talks with the federal farm board, creates an incorporated non profit with regional offices to handle 1930 crop marketing and financing through farm board loans.

Grundy Named Senator to Fill Bill Ware Seat

Joseph R. Grundy, Pennsylvania Republican, designated by Governor Fisher to fill the Senate seat once held by William S. Ware. Grundy, long a behind the scenes tariff advocate, plans to run in the Pennsylvania primary next spring. Vare and possibly Pinchot may also seek the seat.

Hong Kong to Dallas Flight Prize Reopened

Col W E Easterwood Jr a Dallas millionaire reopens his 25000 dollar prize for the first aviator to fly from Hongkong China to Dallas Texas. The offer originally made in 1927 was withdrawn after fatalities in the Oakland to Honolulu Dole race. Easterwood plans Honolulu meetings with James Dole to coordinate new prizes for the summer flight.

Five Die as English Bus Hits Street Car Collision

Five people were killed and 30 injured when a motorbus collided with a street car in Enfield Middlesex. The street car overturned trapping passengers. Four of the victims were women. The crash happened as the bus swerved to avoid a cyclist.

An airmail plane bound for New Orleans from Atlanta via Mobile was forced to land at Gulfport Mississippi after encountering heavy fog over the Louisiana marshes last night. Mail from the plane was transferred at Gulfport for safekeeping.

Warden R A Burns at Kilby Prison investigates an attack on escaped prisoner Will Yarbrough by bloodhounds. Yarbrough received superficial wounds and was treated on return to the prison. Yarbrough and Grover Mitchell escaped together and were pursued by guards and trainers who used sticks to deter the dogs. Yarbrough is serving five burglary and larceny sentences. Mitchell four years for forgery.

Safety concerns for Japanese in Manchuria grow

In northwestern Manchuria several hundred Japanese subjects face ongoing safety worries. A Tokyo report notes only a few individuals are confirmed safe via a December 12 message from the Japanese consul at Manchukuo, while eight earlier messages may have been lost or suppressed. A Dothan policeman on night beat spots a dim setting moon and calls in an alarm of a large fire on West Main Street. Fire crews respond with two trucks, only to find no blaze and return to headquarters. The officer resumes his rounds, noting the night’s routine had been broken.

Death rate on increase says recent report

Washington is report notes 1,378,675 deaths in 1928 giving a death rate of 12.0 per 1000. Heart diseases led with 237,049 deaths, pneumonia followed with 112,195. Increases from 1927 occurred in heart disease, cerebral hemorrhage, nephritis, diabetes, cancer, influenza and pneumonia totals.

Vessel Strikes Rocks in Fog off Cape Rica. 10 Missing

Sale of liquor restored in several Scotland areas

In Edinburgh and Glasgow districts liquor sale was restored after elections held yesterday. Polls in Pollokshaws and four Clyde banks wards approved continued or reissued licenses for alcoholic beverages. The magistrates may renew licenses for other districts, including Calle in Northern Scotland, based on the results.

Revision rules announced by service commission

In Montgomery Alabama the Public Service Commission proposes revisions to regulate power telephone gas water and electricity utilities. A January 6 hearing will review new rules for telephone owners users and annual rate checks to ensure customers receive the lowest available rate and are notified of any switch to a lower rate.
