Bacteria Could Drive Oil From Sand Under Study
In Pennsylvanian labs in Bradford researchers test sulfate reducing bacteria to boost oil from sand deposits. If lab results prove powerful enough, field tests would push oil from beneath the earth, potentially tapping a vast nonrecoverable reserve. State geologist Cathcart notes current methods recover only about 10 percent, with 3.4 billion barrels estimated. bacteria may offer a secondary approach despite neutralization risks. Pennsylvania, though ranked low among oil producers, yields about 14 million barrels yearly due to high lubricant content.
