Travellers Union official visits city for nationwide campaign

Truths J. E. Homer Kerr of the United Commercial Travellers of America is in the city for several days on business connected with a country-wide campaign to improve understanding and cooperation among business branches. He will remain through Sunday. A banquet at the Houston Hotel tonight at 7:30, presided by W. R. Jordan, senior councillor, will discuss the campaign and its growing interest.

Simpson Takes Over His Post

R. T. Simpson of Florence assumed acting duties as solicitor of the eleventh judicial circuit after being appointed by Governor Bibb Graves to replace Henry D. Jones who resigned amid an inquiry into official irregularities. The circuit covers Colbert Lauderdale and Franklin counties. Simpson plans to run in the August 1930 Democratic primary and is a member of the Democratic executive committee.

Evangélist Tent Damaged, Lowered, Repaired After Storm

A severe storm damaged the gospel tent on Wednesday night, it was lowered to the ground on Thursday and repaired with help from Tolbert Show Co and its canvas man. The tent is restored and Evangelist A. J. Ailey resumes services tonight at 7 30, titled What can a Man do With his Sins at the Judgment.

Martial Law Declared in Republic of Haiti

Washington reports martial law declared in the Republic of Haiti amid a teachers strike that spread to other sectors. American marines occupy Haiti as President Hoover plans a commission to study the situation with a view to withdrawing troops. The scope of martial law and precise area remain unclear.

Burglars Loot Camden Post Office of $500

Camden robbers blew the safe and escaped with cash and stamps valued at 500 to 700 dollars. Postmaster H. H. Gale noted the loss in an early morning check. Postoffice Inspector R. N. Tomlinson from Selma investigated for Wilcox county authorities. Entry was gained by forcing the front door. No clues were left. Mrs. Kemp Blackwell and Mrs. Frank Bryan of Columbia visited here Wednesday.

Hoover’s Public Budget At A Glance For Next Year

President Hoover released a concise public budget summary showing 72 percent of the next fiscal year’s spending goes to past wars and defense. About 2.733 billion is for debt service and veterans, with only small sums for education and growth. Public buildings total 246 million, the largest non defense item.

Uniontown Doctor Dies There Late Yesterday

Uniontown obituary reports Dr. Francis Tarleton Jamie aged 46 died at his residence late yesterday from a heart attack. He was a leading physician in the area for 20 years. Survived by widow Mrs. Mattie Knight James and three children, plus two brothers Dr. John James and Joseph James.
