Exxon Valdez spill hearings reveal chain of errors
Testimony to the National Transportation Safety Board in Anchorage details human and mechanical missteps aboard the Exxon Valdez as it struck submerged rocks in Prince William Sound on March 24, spilling 10.9 million gallons of oil. Captain Hazelwood, facing state charges, admitted ultimate responsibility but blamed the third mate, Gregory Cousins, while pilot William Murphy testified that the skipper was often off the bridge in treacherous seas.

Mohammed Ali Hammadi, a Lebanese Shiite militiaman, was found guilty of collective murder in air piracy and related crimes for hijacking a TWA jet to Beirut in 1985 and killing U S sailor Robert Dean Stethem. He received a life term in Frankfurt after the verdict delivered by Judge Heiner Mueckenberger. The Stethem family attended the hearing as Hammadi sat behind bulletproof glass in Preungesheim prison. Their remarks followed the ruling, with Stethem's father praising the decision and calling for stronger international action against terrorism.
