Dixon Petunia Planting Counts 27000 at Nichols Greenhouse

Dixon set to plant 27000 petunia plants this Saturday as the Dixon Men's Garden Club and community groups begin the Petunia Capital of the World project. Nichols, official grower for the club, notes 47 blocks will be planted despite road construction while the Adopt A Block program continues with eight blocks awaiting adopters. Planting starts at 9 a.m. with groups each tending a block and adoption contact available at 284-3805.

Madigan switches to push 20 percent Illinois income tax hike

Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan proposes a 20 percent rise in the state income tax to raise about 800 million dollars for education and local governments. Police chase reaches extreme speeds in Dixon incident

South Elgin man Andrew Milam, 20, was pursued by District 15 and other agencies across Lee and Ogle counties. He reached 115 to 118 mph in multiple zones before a Rochelle arrest at 1:35 a.m. charged with DUI, speeding, eluding, obstructing justice, reckless driving, minor liquor use, and suspended license.

NASA astronauts near miss as T-38 nearly hits Pan Am jet

NASA jet trainer piloted by Atlantis mission commander David Walker deviated from its assigned altitude near Washington while en route to Andrews Air Force Base. The T-38 came within about a quarter mile of Pan Am Flight 140, an Airbus A310 bound for Paris, amid bad weather. FAA investigates pilot deviation as weather and air traffic factors are reviewed.
