Engineer Fred Coombe of the Illinois Capital Development Board cites that over 80 percent of the area lacks modern building codes while major cities have earthquake resistant provisions. He told a Chicago public hearing that a major quake here would cause vast loss of life, infrastructure damage, and unemployment, urging stronger measures from the Governor's Earthquake Preparedness Task Force Mitigation Committee.
