Winter storm snarls Rock River Valley area

Strong winds and heavy snow brought widespread chaos across the Rock River Valley. Schools closed, power outages and multi car crashes surged as a southwest low pressure system moved through Illinois. Bush to propose over 1 billion aid for Panama recovery

President Bush plans to propose more than 1 billion dollars in aid to Panama to rebuild after the U S military invasion and years of corrupt rule. Dixon school board adopts tobacco ban with outdoor exception

The Dixon School Board tentatively approved a policy banning tobacco on school grounds including cigarettes cigars and smokeless forms. Smoking outside during indoor scholastic or athletic events remains allowed with a new ban on bleacher areas during outside events. The board also reviewed an applied economics course and pledged minority recruitment.

Polo teachers file intent to strike over contract delay

Polo teachers, without a new contract since August 1, filed an Intent to Strike. The district and teachers will meet with a federal mediator at 3 30 p m Friday at Polo Community High School. Deb Cheek, chief negotiator, says five days notice is required and Friday’s session may yield a settlement. The teachers will wait at the high school for the outcome.
