Jetliner crash in fog kills 67 of 158 aboard near JFK

A Colombian Avianca Boeing 707 crashed on a second landing attempt at JFK in heavy fog and rain. At least 67 dead, 80 injured. survivors describe a sudden, violent impact with bodies scattered on a wooded hillside. Authorities cite possible fuel exhaustion and engine trouble. A makeshift morgue formed near John McEnroe’s parents’ mansion as responders rushed to aid victims.

Snowbound area digs out after six inch storm

Area residents worked to clear almost six inches of snow that fell in the Rock River Valley with Dixon reporting 5.6 inches. Roads were reopening as snow crews salted and cleared routes while drivers were urged to expect slick patches as salt takes effect. Police logged weather related incidents and power outages affected about 4,000 Commonwealth Edison customers before restoration by six p.m. A Rochelle man was injured in a snow related incident and a gas leak prompted Rochelle Fire Department response after a plow struck a gas line. Downtown Dixon to showcase plan for empty store revival

Linda Brantley, chair of the Dixon Commercial Progress Association, will present a 45 minute multimedia show at the Illinois Retail Merchants Association convention in Chicago on April 18. The talk promotes the USF&G project and Dixon progress to about 300 retailers.

Reagan's world unchanged in exile from White House

After a year away from the presidency Ronald Reagan continues much as before. Public affection remains strong though some observers question past payoffs and former-president ethics. Critics noted his Japan trip and a $2 million payment from Fuji TV group. Reagan defended his earnings, noting he could have returned to acting but rejected it as cashing in on the presidency.
