Setting yield goals for farm fertility planning
Farmers should set a realistic yield goal as a primary step in fertility planning. A 10 percent bump over the five year field average helps ensure fertility is not a limiting factor, with 165 bushels per acre as a sample goal from a 150 average. Soil type variations can alter optimal fertilizer needs, so best management practices are essential to prevent overfertilization and protect water supplies. If no historical data exists, use a soil productivity index to estimate yields by soil mix and field area, per Extension Circular 1156 from the Ogle County Extension Office.

Carryover concerns in 1989 farmers face herbicide residue
Uncertainty over carryover in 1989 grows amid variable weather. Extension offices offer sampling guidance for bioassays and lab tests. Advice includes prioritizing corn on set aside or low herbicide fields, using cover crops to aid degradation, selecting tolerant hybrids, and avoiding stress causing herbicides. Follow label-recommended recrop intervals.
