Forest fire dangers rise early amid light snow and scarce rain

Major Evan W. Kelley, regional forester at Missoula, warns that light winter snowfall and drought in timbered districts create early dangerous conditions. He cites last year’s 3,000 regional fires, 1,200 man caused, burning 272,000 acres and costing over 1.9 million dollars, urging strict fire prevention this outdoor season. Smokers caused nearly 400 fires, and unextinguished campfires left about 200 fires, burning 36,000 acres and causing substantial damages. He calls it a crime of carelessness and a duty of citizenship to prevent similar losses this year.
