English Christmas dinner in Constantinople shows a Babel of guests
Mrs. Laffan Hanly hosted fifty guests in Pera to display a traditional English Christmas. Guests from Greece, Persia, Turkey, France, Armenia, Russia, England, America and more spoke thirteen languages. The feast featured roast beef, plum pudding and mince pies, but mutual sociability failed as diners split by nationality. Hadji Rassim Effendi, censor for the day, left early after three porkish pieces.
