Pioneer Montana doctor who stayed in Whitehall through hard times
Dr. Lawrence S. Packard, one of Montana’s early physicians, came to Whitehall in 1902 to practice medicine after a football career at the University of Nebraska. He describes Jefferson valley life, rough mining era medicine, long horse and sleigh trips, improvised care for infants, and his wife’s nursing role. He recalls the Mayflower mine, the Milwaukee era, and treating miners, gunshot wounds, and accident victims without modern facilities.
