Convict Brandon Returned to Montana State Prison
Jack Brandon, 30, who escaped from Deer Lodge state prison about a month ago, was arrested by Deputy Hadley at Monida after wrecking a car near Armstead. Sheriff Temple returned him to Dillon for state custody. The vehicle, badly damaged, had been driven off with guard posts torn out and owners unidentified.

James J. Flaherty of Great Falls announces T. E. Gilbert as county drive chairman for the scrap salvage campaign. Small boxes are placed around the city for old key deposits as part of a two week drive to gather keys valued for their 80 percent nickel content. The local rationing board announces No 9 sugar stamps will be valid for three pounds of home use from November 1 to December 15. Institutions may use 60 percent and industrial users 70 percent of their bases. Stamp No 8 remains valid for five pounds until midnight October 31.

Dillon schools shift to later hours starting Monday October 19. The training school opens at 10:00, high school at 9:30, Normal college at 9:00 with afternoon sessions at 1:30 and a 12:30 to 1:30 intermission. The change aims to keep daylight hours and save heat and light, lasting until a possible April or May 1943 review.

Dillon Man Jacob L. Mittlemier Dies After Heart Attack
Jacob L. Mittlemier died suddenly from a heart attack at his Dillon home last Saturday. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Rose Catholic Church, with burial in Mountain View cemetery. Born May 8, 1880 in Hayes Kansas, he moved to Dillon as a boy and worked 46 years at the Dillon Furniture Company as an upholsterer and packer. He was a member of St. Rose Church and longtime Democratic precinct committeeman. Survived by wife Pearl a son Earl G. Mittlemier and daughter in law Ardine of Roundup plus three nieces Clara Tapio Butte Margaret Baxter Los Angeles and Caroline Fitzpatrick Oregon.

Hunters Ready For Pheasant Season Opener
Community sportsmen prepare for the pheasant and Hungarian partridge season opening next Sunday Oct. 25 with sun up to sun down hunting hours. Phillip McGovern, born February 21 1863 in Wisconsin, moved from Virginia City to Dillon in 1920 and was an honorary member of the Beaverhead Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers. Funeral plans not yet set. Beaverhead county voters will travel to polling places for the general election on November 3. Ballots will include state, national, county and township offices, plus two referendums and two constitutional amendments. One amendment would modify Section 11 of Article XI to change the state board of education’s appointment, duties and terms, and another would adjust county auditor and county attorney terms.

Mrs Anna Hart Dies in Hollywood California
Former Dillon resident Mrs. Anna Hart died October 9 at her daughter Mrs Dan Shivelys home in Hollywood California. A milliner in Dillon for years she left about 20 years ago for Los Angeles and had been healthy until a stroke a year ago. She is survived by her daughter Mrs Dan Shively and son M Hart.
