Fire controlman James Mooney of Dillon Montana served aboard an LCI in the final Pacific weeks patrolling the Carolines to block Jap garrisons. The flotilla, praised by Commodore A B Brown, supported Peleliu operations and later took on occupation duties in Northern Honshu and Hokkaido aboard USS Hoggatt Bay with Lt Francis Tonney. Composite Squadron 99 flew 1327 sorties during Okinawa operations.

Montana event plans finalized for the Dillon Hereford Futurity and bull sale. The show occurs Sunday October 21 with $500 in prizes awarded at a city hall smoker. the sale follows Monday October 22. Sixty boys and 53 girls participated in the first national student opinion poll. A majority doubt the UN will prevent another war in their lifetime, with 52 saying yes and 47 saying no. Responses to life aims show many favor a simple secure life, while several seek wealth, status, or service. Obstacles cited include lack of money and education, with many unsure of their path.

The state highway commission calls for bids on two Beaverhead River bridges north and south of Dillon and 1.348 miles of new highway from Montana and Butte streets in Dillon. The project includes a 140-foot steel and concrete bridge south of the present structure and a three-span bridge north of Dillon plus a concrete box culvert and related grading and surfacing.

William Hermann 63 dies after long illness at Dillon ranch
William Hermann of Beaverhead county died at his ranch north of Dillon after two years of illness. Born March 19, 1882 in St. Joseph Missouri, he lived most of his life on the Hermann ranch near Lovers Leap and later ran a Big Hole basin ranch. He is survived by a brother and sister in Dillon, a nephew in the Navy in Manila, and a niece in Seattle. Funeral services were held at St. Rose Catholic church with Rev. Fr. Timothy Clifford officiating, interment at Mountain View cemetery.
