Promotion and awards reach Dillon area service members

Ra Lt. Commander Francis E. Tonrey earns a promotion and air medal with two gold stars and the navy distinguished flying cross for heroism and aerial strikes near the Ryukyu Islands. His wife will join him in Austin before they plan to reach Dillon around November 1. Other local servicemen return or await deployment including Fu Sgt Henry Hignight, Ra William Pedersen, and Capt. Fred Arthur Hansen.

Forgery Suspect Sentenced To Three Years In State Prison

James Louis Wallace 41 received a three year term after pleading guilty to forgery in district court before Judge Lyman H. Bennett. He was transported to Deer Lodge to begin serving. Wallace admitted prior vagrancy arrest in South Dakota and said he came to Montana from Illinois where he worked as an iron worker.

Pioneer Trails group speaker urges hunting historic sites for tourism

Dr. Howard Driggs, president of the American Pioneer Trails association, spoke at a Dillon Rotary and Kiwanis joint dinner. He praised Montana and Dillon’s ties to Lewis and Clark history, urged investment in historic shrines, and urged communities to promote sites from Bannack to Virginia City. He highlighted Dillon’s climate, ideals, and opportunities for tourism.

Big game season opens in Beaverhead County

Beaverhead County reports the deer and elk season runs October 15 to November 15 with elk limited to designated areas. Moose hunting is allowed this year by special permit drawn in Helena, marking a rare first open moose season in many years. A social security information visit is planned for October with office outreach in Dillon Twin Bridges Sheridan and Virginia City.

Zone Meeting of VFW Post Sets May Encampment Site

Dillon was recommended as the next district encampment site for the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the last district meeting in Butte on October 7. Lloyd Whipple post 4163 will decide at tomorrow night’s 8:30 in the city council chambers. Speakers include George R. Baker from the United States Employment Service and James McCashin of the Veterans Welfare Commission. Incoming plans and activities will be discussed and all members urged to attend.

Youth Sunday Observed at St James Church

The opening meeting for St James youth groups featured a dinner hosted by parish members. Plans for Youth Sunday on October 21 were set, with visiting youth from Sheridan Virginia City and Ennis invited. Archdeacon Norman L. Foote will preach and celebrate at the eleven o clock service with junior choir and school girls.

Mrs Clyde Smith Dies In Butte Hospital

Mrs Madge Smith 53 wife of Dillon rancher Clyde Smith died in a Butte hospital from infection after a broken leg. Born May 18 1891 in West Virginia she married Clyde Smith in 1916 and moved to Montana. Survived by husband eight children two grandchildren a host of relatives and sisters in West Virginia. Car Recovered Near Armstead After Phoenix Theft

A Hudson sedan stolen from a Phoenix used car lot was found abandoned Saturday near Armstead and towed to Dillon by Highway Patrolman Robert Wright and Undersheriff M G Ramsey. Phoenix authorities will send a deputy to retrieve the vehicle. The thief remains at large.

Montana Dillon Hereford Futurity Show and Sale Planned

The Dillon Chamber of Commerce sponsors the annual Hereford show and sale set for Sunday and Monday October 21 and 22 with Paul Orcutt judging Sunday afternoon. Thirty two consignors and top Montana breeders enter the event at the fair grounds sale starts 1 PM Monday with H B Sager auctioneering. The smoker for stock men follows Sunday at 8 15 PM at the city hall auditorium under the Dillon Elks lodge.

Armstead Road Considered by Beaverhead County Board

Beaverhead county commissioners held a regular meeting October 1 2 and 4 1945 with Commissioners Stahl Henneberry and Jackson and Clerk Buckingham. The board approved the prior session proceedings and Henneberry presented an order regarding Beaverhead county ownership of property acquired by tax deed.

Books for Russia Drive Extended To November 2

Beaverhead county extends the Books for Russia campaign to November 2 to gather more volumes. Veterans of Foreign Wars volunteers will collect books in Dillon and transport them to city hall for shipment. Donations may be left at schools courthouse or the Andrus hotel with Bennett Cerf as national chair and Governor Ford plus Senator Murray as Montana honorary chairs.

Former Dillon Resident Adolph Decker Dies in Illinois City

Adolph C. Decker once a Beaverhead County resident died recently in Chester Illinois according to word received by Rev Richard Price of Miles City formerly of Dillon. Decker operated a Chester area farm most of his life after Beaverhead County High School graduation and is survived by his wife and 11 children.

Veterans find steady jobs as Dillon employers hire

George R. Baker of the U S Employment Service says veterans and workers returning to Dillon are readily placed in local jobs. He notes immigrant families face housing shortages and a community action committee will study employment and housing needs with business, labor, and civic groups. Similar committees are active in other Montana towns.

Big Hole veteran dies in accidental shooting

Morris Helming, 25, a Big Hole basin veteran who was discharged two weeks earlier, died after an accidental rifle discharge while his wife Jean and he were en route to cut timber. The bullet struck his neck and shoulder, and he died shortly after on the Wisdom road near the Big Hole battlefield. He served five years in the army intelligence air corps.

Beaverhead County High School extended its unblemished streak with a 37-0 win over Helena High seconds. Bill Harrison returned a first quarter interception for a TD, Chuck Davis added a 26 yard run, Batemann found the end zone, and Coppin to Porter produced another score. Beaverhead post American Legion met at Andrus hotel club rooms with Vice-commander Farnum Schuyler presiding. Neil Sullivan announced Armistice Day dance at city hall on Nov 10 open to the public and a possible technicolor film War Comes to America. The drive to 158 members begins soon after a current year ending at 190. Ed Donovan aims to open clubrooms daily for veterans. George R. Bruce Grimes on trombone and Eugene Bennett on tuba from Beaverhead county high school earned selection to the all-state band for Oct 25 and 26 concerts in Bozeman. The 200-member ensemble will be guided by Fred Honeychurch with Dorothy Newnes chosen for the piano ensemble vacancy and Tanya Johnson as alternate. Ranchers Meeting Planned in Lima For October 22

A Lima meeting for farmers ranchers power machine operators and truckers will be held at the Lima theatre at 8 o clock Monday evening October 22. Carter Oil through Jesse A Owen sponsors the event with the theme Food Will Win the Peace. The program includes information entertainment and movies with prizes.
