1st Lt. Dafford W. Myers of Dillon Montana receives the first oak leaf cluster to the air medal for meritorious achievement in sustained operational flight missions in the Southwest Pacific Area. He flew escort missions convoy protection patrols reconnaissance interceptions and strafing attacks over the Philippine Islands Dutch East Indies New Guinea Formosa and China as a P 38 pilot in the Jungle Air Force.

Beaverhead Legion Post Plans Active Entertainment Program

Beaverhead Post of the American Legion readies a busy year as World War II veterans assume key roles on committees. A Thursday meeting at the Andrus hotel club rooms approved a dances and public entertainment plan and proposed regular club room hours to serve retiring and visiting veterans.

Wilford B. Willey Former Beaverhead Supervisor Dies in California

Wilford B. Willey aged 62, longtime Beaverhead National Forest supervisor since 1936, died at his El Monte California home after a two month illness. Born March 21 1883 in Nunda New York he earned a BA from Cornell in 1907 and a forestry master's from Yale in 1908 joining the forest service that year.

Beaverhead Residents Adjust To Extra Sleep Hour

Beaverhead residents gained an hour of sleep as clocks shifted back on Saturday night. Some missed the change, arriving early to church or waiting for radio programs. Ranchers kept war time hours, while schools adjusted to new start times and a stricter curfew from 10 to 9. Chief Elza Patrick pledged strict enforcement.

Dillon Daughters of the Nile visit highlights finance report

Mrs. Sybilla G. Schwartz of Anaconda Queen of Tirzah temple Daughters of the Nile visited the Dillon Daughters of the Nile sewing club lunch and meeting followed by a details of the Citizens Committee finances from March 17 1942 to Sept 11 1945 totaling 4559.86 receipts and 4009.92 expenditures. The committee’s receipts came from dances football games donations jar collections and a rodeo food sale.

Final Beaverhead Paper Drive Is Distinct Success

Victims of a car crash near Dell on Highway 91 sustained minor injuries. Lois Seybold and Mrs. David Freeman of Lima escaped serious harm, while John W. Roberts and his son of Dillon suffered only slight injuries in a head on collision between a passenger car and a truck. The car front was crushed and engine pushed under the floorboards. truck front and cab were badly damaged.

Elks Dinner and Card Party Attract 150 Plus Attendees

More than 150 Elks and their ladies attended a pot luck dinner at the I.O.O.F. hall sponsored by the Ladies of the Elks, with a card party to follow. Cakes raffled by Mrs. Henry Deutsch and Mrs. Chris Peterson were auctioned after resale, proceeds benefiting the lodge. Pinochle high scores went to Isabel Bay and William McFadden. low to June Wil ley and Ross Emerick. Bridge high scores were posted by Mrs. Lambert, Eliel, and Harold Babcock with Mrs. Paul Stahl Jr. and Lambert Eliel as low.

Carload of Waste Paper Drives Dillon Support

Beaverhead county salvage efforts report a carload of waste paper and rags collected by Lloyd Whipple post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in a two week drive that began Sept. 23. Floyd Vandegrift announced the campaign’s end and Beaverhead county’s salvage progress.

Librarian Appointed at Normal College

Miss Myrtle Savidge was named acting librarian at the Normal college with Professors Anderson Jordan and Dr. Davis assisting. The library will stay open longer this year and a Britannica set was added along with about a thousand dollars in new books. Miss Margaret Madeen is the text book librarian as 27 students register and 13 enroll in the exceptional children department. The first faculty meeting of the year, held at the residence hall, outlined plans to connect with Montana professional groups.

Dillon Hereford Futurity Show and Sale Planned

Plans for the Dillon Hereford Futurity show and sale to be held Sunday and Monday October 21 and 22 are nearing completion. J H Mikkelson secretary reports sixty range bulls and herd sires from leading Montana herds entered. H B Sager will auctioneer with A G Williams clerk. Ringmen include Ross Miller R J Struckman Forrest Bassford and E A Phillips. Show opens Sunday at 1 pm at the fairgrounds sales pavilion Monday afternoon sale follows.

Beaverhead War Fund Drive Underway for 4800 Goal

Beaverhead residents are asked to donate to the National War Fund drive which opened Monday with a raised county quota of 4800. USO and relief agencies still need support as the house-to-house canvass in Dillon nears completion, under city chairman Mrs J C Wedum. About 2,000 American performers are overseas.

Beaverhead Home Demonstration Council Installs Officers

Mrs Harold M Warner became president of the Beaverhead Home Demonstration club council at the fall meeting held at Beaverhead County High School. W D Tovey and Roger Sweeney were installed as vice president and secretary treasurer. Lois Huffman opened the session and J H Mikkelson spoke on extending programs. A luncheon preceded the afternoon session with nearly all clubs present.

Rotary and Kiwanis to Hold Joint Dinner Meeting

Dillon clubs Rotary and Kiwanis plan a joint dinner for next Wednesday evening October 10 at 6 45 announced at the Rotary weekly meeting. Dr Howard Driggs Pioneer Trails association president will be the speaker and is noted author and western history authority. Prof J Ford McBain spoke Monday night of an auto trip to Connecticut and discussed crops farms industry and transportation in the region.

Ranch hand Ernest Marchand dies after brief illness

Ernest Marchand 54 a Beaverhead County ranch laborer died last Wednesday after a short illness at a local hotel. His brother in law and sister Frank and Mrs Gleize drove from Puente California with the body to Pomona California for funeral and interment. Born in France October 17 1890 he came to the United States at 18 and later lived in Idaho before settling in Beaverhead. He served in World War I and worked on several Beaverhead ranches mainly as a herder and was well known locally.

Beaverhead county high school opens the season on its home gridiron meeting rival Anaconda Central. The Beavers seek a third straight district football title after beating the Saints 20-0 last year and have previously edged Anaconda Central for district hoops titles.
