Montana state and private banks report deposits totaling 85.57 million and resources of 95.12 million as of October 8 1928 up from June 30. The report cites an 8.26 million rise in deposits and a stronger reserve position over six months, amid broader state prosperity.
West best Hereford Aberdeen Angus and Shorthorn herds join the third annual Christmas Livestock Week at Los Angeles Union Stock Yards December 2 to 8. Top names include H M Barngrover Elk Grove H A Baldwin Pleasanton Dos Pueblos Land & Improvement Co Santa Barbara Winterton Bros Woodland and Congdon & Battles Yakima. The event features grand and reserve champions from California State Fair Omaha and Kansas City with silver services and a top steer shipment from Kansas City.
The Montana Tuberculosis Association launches its Christmas Seal sale on Thanksgiving day with over 1,000 volunteers in towns and hamlets across the state to fund public health nursing, patient care, nutrition education, and tuberculosis prevention programs. Since 1916 the death rate fell from 118.8 to 65.5 per 100,000 by 1927 due to the association's work, part of a 25 year origin from Denmark.
Dillon becomes a leading fur center as multiple farms expand near the city. Dr and Mrs L F Molleur ship eight pairs of silver black foxes to their north Dillon farm, kept at C BE Blinn’s site till spring. Virginia M Fuller of Thermopolis Wyoming arrives to start a silver fox operation here. Beaverhead Fur Farm expands with many silver foxes and Northwest’s best equipped plant, while others like Judson P Best and Lorenzo Cushing focus on chinchilla rabbits and muskrat ventures nearby.
Mrs. Virginia Fuller announced in Butte that a Dillon fur farm will open mid February. She surveyed Montana Utah and Idaho and chose Dillon for cheap hay and grains to feed Mountain Silver Fox Diamond American White and Mink rabbits. Pelts will go to a Minneapolis firm and meat locally or to eastern shippers. Davies will be raised for medical firm tests in Kansas City.
Oregon Short Line Railroad pays $41,551.61 as Beaverhead county first installment for 1928 taxes to Nora Connelley, county treasurer, from East Lake City headquarters. A second half of the Beaverhead tax, same amount, due in May next year. Total Oregon Short Line taxes equal $83,103.22 with allocations for state general, county general, school, and city taxes.
R B Stevens traveling NP railroad rep visited Dillon to promote the International Livestock Show in Chicago during the first week of December. The event highlights agricultural fashions and offers a 353.00 round trip fare for Montana exhibitors traveling to the international show. The Montana presence is strongly represented in exhibits across departments.
