Beaverhead County High Opens Basketball Amid Fresh Face

Beaverhead County High School starts the basketball season with many inexperienced players joining a largely retooled lineup. Johnson and Westad are the only two returning veterans with two years of experience, joined by Brown and Burt from last year. An interclass tournament helped Coach Taylor assess prospects, with juniors dominating and a long list of newcomers added to the squad. The Beaverhead schedule will include Anaconda High, Butte Central, Butte High, Helena High and other opponents, with season tickets on sale once the schedule is finalized.

Dillon Man Reunited With Family After 40 Years

Otto Buehring, 71, who vanished in 1908 after an accident and wandered as a prospector, reunites with wife Henrietta Johannsen and son in Tampa Florida. He recalled his past after memory returned and learned his wife had remarried. The couple has yet to decide on remarriage.

Guilty Plea Leads to Three-Year Prison Term

William T. Anderson admitted forging John Meade s name on an American Express money order in district court Monday afternoon. Judge Lyman H. Bennett sentenced him to three years in the state prison.

The Dillon Parent-Teacher Association was reformed at a Bagley building meeting. Mrs Charles McGahan was elected president with Mrs Dee Patton first vice president Joe Krall second vice president Mrs William Straugh secretary and Mrs Thurman Stocking treasurer. Earl Allen named publicity chairman and several committees were formed. A follow up meeting is slated for November 29 with monthly sessions planned.

Armistice Day Observed With Fitting Rites

Dillon residents observed the thirtieth Armistice Day with a morning program at the high school auditorium, a large veterans gathering at the city hall banquet and dance, and a well attended after noon in the firemen quarters. The program featured Brinton Jackson and the college chorus, a address by Sheldon E. Davis, and taps after a moment of silence. The event was sponsored by Beaverhead Post 20 of the American Legion and Lloyd Whipple Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars with auxiliaries aiding at a turkey buffet banquet that evening.

Frances Yeend the prominent soprano will be the first artist in the Dillon Community Concert series opening next Friday at Beaverhead county high school auditorium. Dillon Man to Attend National Reclamation Conclave

O A Bergeson Montana reclamation advocate and Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce chair travels to Oklahoma City with 10 Montana delegates for the National Reclamation association meeting November 17 to 19. He has long supported dam construction statewide and reported on the Armstead dam prospects at a chamber meeting.

Forfeits Bond In Ida Grove Driving While Intoxicated Case

Jack Heyrend of Ida Grove forfeited a $75 bond after failing to appear in police court to answer a drunken driving charge. He was arrested shortly after midnight Sunday by Night Officer Lee Williams, according to Chief Dan Mooney.

Vocalists Entertain Rotary Club in Dillon

Montana State Normal College students performed many musical numbers for the Dillon Rotary Club at the Andrus dining room. Guests included Clarence Feaney of Butte and Commissioner Parke Scott. Dale Dart spoke urging support for basketball uniforms for grade school boys and early athletic training before high school. Dr. S. E. Davis welcomed Elliott Redman of Beaverhead forest as a new member.

Prof Hofmeister Honored by Northwest Watercolor Society

Four paintings by Andrew Hofmeister assistant professor of fine arts at Washington State College Pullman hung in an exhibit by 43 members of the Northwest Watercolor Society at the Riverside Museum New York City running October 19 to November 7. Hofmeister formerly taught art at Beaverhead County High School.

Institute Held Monday for Beaverhead Teachers

Beaverhead county educators gathered at the county high school for the annual institute meeting. Morning session led by Ronald Cook showcased pupil demonstrations from Riverside Rhythm band and a teaching techniques showcase. Afternoon program featured Carl Klass and student square dances with emphasis on physical education methods and heritage dances replacing jitterbug in some areas.

Beaverhead FFA Members Attend National Convention

Nine Beaverhead county youths Dan Scott Donald Stefanatz Donald Jones Bruce Knox Roscoe Pilon Russell Peterson Frank Wilke Bill Tash and Bill Nelson traveled to Kansas City Missouri for the national Future Farmers of America convention. The event began Sunday and runs through Thursday with Nelson earning a free trip for outstanding electricity work. Chaperones Mrs. Parke T. Scott and Orion Pilon provided car transportation.

Fitzsimmons Rites Conducted Thursday

Funeral services for the late A. J. Fitzsimmons were held last Thursday afternoon at the Brun dage chapel with Rev. Belle Long of the First Baptist church officiating. Interment was in Mountain View cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Hignation, Chester Buckingham, John Jz, Fred Woodside, Harold Warner and Gabriel Hoyland.

Destructive Grass Fire Threatens City Near Beaverhead

A major grass fire swept across meadowland south of town along the railroad and Beaverhead river, consuming hay, pasture, and a beaver slide derrick on Roscoe Corner ranch under wind driven conditions. Firefighters from Dillon and the Beaverhead forest department, aided by volunteers, contained the blaze with rivers of water and a Riverside truck, as snow ended the threat Monday morning.

Special Elk Season Open in Blacktail

The State Fish and Game commission orders a three week special elk season in Blacktail allowing 150 antlered elk to be killed. Beaverhead Sportsmen’s Club conducts three drawings for 50 permits each on Nov 20 and Dec 4 with in person registration and a $1 license fee. Hunt starts Sunday after each drawing and applicants must hold a valid big game license.

Mrs Ruth Porter district No 4 president of the VFW auxiliaries paid an official visit to Lloyd Whipple post auxiliary at the regular meeting in the 10 O F hall. Early-Day Home Damaged by Dillon Fire

The Clarence Axe residence on South Washington street, among Dillon’s oldest, suffered attic fire damage Monday evening from a possible defective tie. Firemen cut through the ceiling to reach the blaze, quickly extinguishing it but causing substantial water damage to furniture and equipment. The home houses pioneer resident Mr. Axe his son Myron and daughter in law. Built by Nathan Axe, an early Beaverhead valley settler, east of the site of the Normal college.

Wisdom resident dies after exposure in thicket

An autopsy by Coroner Raymond Schwartz found Wisdom resident Eugene H. Colligan died of natural causes probably due to exposure after being lost since November. He was born November 30 1882 in Milchil New Jersey and lived in Beaverhead county 27 years. He served in World War I and worked as a ranch laborer before settling in Wisdom. Relatives listed include sister Anna Grove Venice California and niece Mrs Foley Alhambra California.
