Fifty elk hunting permits issued Saturday in Dillon region

Fifty special elk licenses were issued at the city hall auditorium last Saturday morning for elk hunting in the Blacktail region southeast of Dillon. Recipients include residents of Beaverhead County such as William Spahr, Dennis Smith, Tom Larson, Mrs. Robert Wright, and many others from Dillon and nearby towns. Another 50 permits are to be offered next Saturday between 8 and 10 AM and on December 4 at the same time, with Elmo Winn of the Beaverhead Sportsmen's Club noting the plan for additional licenses.

Elk hunter dies of heart attack during Beaverhead hunt

Thurman G. Stocking 45, a Dillon resident, died Sunday afternoon from a heart attack while elk hunting in the Long Creek region east of His companion, Tom Larson, found Stocking after delaying their reunion. Coroner and sheriff investigated no wounds or external injuries. Stocking, born February 23, 1903 in Douglas Wyoming, had lived in Montana 34 years and in Dillon since 1947. Surviving wife Gladys, daughter Carol Jean, and his father and stepmothers Roy Wilkinson Asnewell and Don Wilkinson of Jena.

Beaverhead Chamber Plans Three-Night Holiday Store Hours

Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce directors approved three extended shopping nights during the holiday season with stores open December 17, 18 and 20 until 8 p m. Merchants were consulted and will follow the plan. A December 1 membership drive will be led by Alan Bradley with Wilbur Squires and Paul Puyear. The Christmas party is set for December 18, hosted by business and professional women, and a campaign to recruit Blue Cross Blue Shield members will accompany the effort.

James M Nye Dies Sunday in Portland

James M Nye 82 an early Beaverhead county rancher died Sunday in Portland Oregon where he had lived since retiring four years ago Born July 20 1866 near Minoak Indiana he came to Montana in 1882 and helped build in Madison and Jefferson counties later raised horses sheep and cattle in Centennial valley before moving to Portland He is survived by his widow four sons a brother and many grandchildren and great grandchildren Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 pm at Brundage chapel Dillon

Eugene H. Colligan Buried in Butte with Legion Tribute

Last rites for Eugene H. Colligan who died in wisdom were held at St. Joseph church with Father Fenlon officiating. Graveside rites at Holy Cross cemetery were led by Father O Shea and Father Harrington with a full American Legion firing squad and color guard. Silver Bow Post No. 1 presented military honors. pallbearers named Frank Winninghoff Andrew O'Brien James Combe Earl Shea Fred Green and Charles Poole. Post commanders Ray Schilling and E B Wainwright attended along with other post members and relatives. Milwaukee Post No. 2028 also sent a representative. Beaverhead Boy Wins at KC Meet

Four national winners in farm and home electrification were named at the 20th Future Farmers of America convention in Kansas City. Richard Herrman, William Nelson, Richard McConnell, and Lewis Wroten received awards up to 250 dollars. Beaverhead’s William Nelson among them. The Beaverhead FFA delegation, led by Donald Stefanatz and Bill Nelson, returned home excited after the four day event amid travel delays from a Great Plains storm. George Melton left for Los Angeles for treatment of an injured eye.

Half of county taxes due with four days left

Car Demolished by Freight Locomotive at Red Rock Crossing

A passenger car owned by Stanley R. Smith, an employee of the L. S. Staudenmeyer ranch, was demolished by a northbound freight locomotive at the Joe Roe crossing near Red Rock early Monday. Smith said his car stalled on the crossing and he could not push it off. State Patrolman Robert Wright reported the incident. train crewmen could not see the locomotive in the early darkness.

Mrs. J. A. Williams named county commander of the annual cancer control drive in Beaverhead. She joined county leaders in Missoula for a three day session with noted speakers on the cancer threat and the need for funds to sustain the fight. Detailed plans will be announced soon.

Local pastor accepts call to Miles City

Rev. James M. Hunter of Grace Memorial Methodist church is transferred to the Miles City Methodist church effective after Sunday, Nov. 28. Hunter has served Dillon and Lima since 1947 after beginning in Dillon in 1944, while Howard Spitwale will succeed him in Dillon arriving in December with his family.

Christmas seal sale opens in Montana to fund TB control

The 42nd annual Christmas seal sale in Montana begins Monday to fund tuberculosis control. Mrs. Henrietta Crockett notes 1947 had 135 TB deaths and 547 new cases, urging funds for broader case finding. The mobile unit identified 206 of last year’s cases and has X-rayed many Montanans, visiting all counties and reservations. Hundreds of Beaverhead residents received seals and are urged to send remittances promptly. The seal sale committee includes Mrs. T. Lee McCracken and others.
