Controlled storage keeps apples prime in atmosphere storage
Prof. R. M. Smock of Cornell says apples stored in specially constructed controlled atmosphere rooms stay prime from September to May or June. Over 100,000 bushels are stored in 15 New York state facilities, the first of their kind in the nation. Ten years of tests show atmosphere storage can double ordinary shelf life for McIntosh if rooms are well built and run, with Delicous and Northern Spy also performing well when stored separately.

Sweet Potatoes Offer New Farm Income Boost

Covington cites a U S Department of Agriculture request to raise production 12 percent. Even with that increase output would remain about 10 percent below the 1937-46 annual average. Farmers planning larger acreage should assess market outlets before planting.
