Baby Rose Steamer at Fort Benton Recalled in Local History
A fragmentary 1909 Fort Benton steamboat tale recalls the Baby Rose the only commercial steamer built there. Charles Crepeau supervised construction with ship carpenters from Tacoma and his daughter Rose christened the vessel. The 71 foot craft ran briefly on the Missouri River between Fort Benton and points downstream before ice ended its promising run.

The Baby Rose River Venture to Round Butte Ends in Wreck
The Baby Rose, July 10, towed a long barge toward Round Butte 300 miles below Fort Benton. It took on 60 tons of coal near Wilder as Archieer joined the voyage. The steamer bucked and rolled, used excessive fuel, and Captain Crepeau ordered the barge cast off to return to Fort Benton. The attempt failed and river booster traffic faded after 1908. The Baby Rose later wrecked in ice in 1909 below the Pioneer store site, with timbers still visible as spring ice clears.
