Beaverher County Officers File for Re-Election

Two more Beaverher County officers filed for re election in the past week raising the total candidates to four. Sheriff Paul H. Temple and Treasurer Bertie Mathews filed for their offices while Edgar B. Rife, a six year board member and since 1937 chairman, filed Monday for the democratic nomination for county commissioner. German-born Beaverhead prospector R Peterson dies at 76

Rudolph Peterson of Beaverhead county died Friday night after a long illness at his Dakota street home. A German native born 76 years ago he arrived in 1888 and worked in Bannack station and other mining districts. No relatives in the United States survive. Funeral was held Monday at Brundage with Rev J A Meeke officiating and burial at Mountain View cemetery.

Dillon High School Girl Dies in Butte

Funeral services were held in Wisdom for Jean McDowell the daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank McDowell. She died at St James hospital in Butte at 430 pm Thursday after a five day illness with pneumonia. Jean finished Wisdom grade school and was a Dillon High School freshman. Her brother Melvin also a freshman accompanied her home for a weekend visit but she grew ill and was taken to Butte Tuesday.

Dillon Man Dies Monday Night in Butte

Frank Conklin, a well known Dillon resident, died Monday night at Murray hospital in Butte after a four day illness. He was 75, born February 24 1863 in Pigskill New York and moved to Beaverhead county in 1890 where he ran a Dillon area ranch. He leaves two daughters Mrs Anna James of Dayton and others in the community.

Postoffice mural placed in Dillon lobby

News from the States by Mrs. A J Lochrie was installed yesterday in the Dillon post office lobby. The mural shows Montana territorial days circa 1878 with miners cowboys trappers and Indians around a newspaper, sheep and mountains. The Treasury Department contracted the work with a local committee. it is not a WPA project.

Beaverhead County High Names Pahnish Valedictorian

Beaverhead County High School announces Floyd Pahnish as valedictorian for the Class of 1938 and Frances Pickolick as salutatorian. Pahnish, a senior in the agricultural department, carries a 2.871 average and is active in Future Farmer projects and stock teams. The annual class play Miss Millions opened senior activities.

Beaverhead Students Shine At State Meet In Bozeman

Arthur Christensen of Beaverhead County High School won first in public speaking at the state high school week and Future Farmers contests in Bozeman. The Beaverhead FFA also earned honorable mention in the scrapbook and sixth in judging. Floyd Pahnish won first in sheep judging and second in hog judging with Tex Smith also placing in poultry. Christensen won a cash award and a trip to Estes Park for the western states finals and was elected vice president of the state Future Farmers association.

Annual W A A Play Day Set For Saturday

The M S N C Women s Athletic Association hosts eight high schools for the annual high school play day on Saturday. Events include swimming in the Normal pool in the morning and a novelty track meet at Torrey Lodge with one representative from each school.

Child Health Day Observed In Beaverhead County

Beaverhead rural schools showcased health-related projects in Dillon store windows over the weekend to mark Child Health Day Sunday. Twenty three schools entered, supervised by County Nurse Margaret Holloran and County Superintendent Nell Doyle, drawing hundreds of local viewers over four days. The Dillon training school contributed a health program as part of the observance.

Beaverhead High Wins Southwestern District Track Meet

Beaverhead high school’s track team won the southwestern district meet at the fairgrounds with 38 points, Whitehall 31, Sheridan 30, and Ennis and Twin Bridges 9 each. Schenk of Twin Bridges set the state interscholastic record in the 440 yards at 51.1 seconds, Dillon earning many points on seconds and thirds, while Tait of Dillon tied for first in pole vault but placed second on a tiebreaker.

Piano Ensemble To Appear Here May 18

Sixteen pianists form the Butte ensemble directed by Ralph McFadden will perform in the gymnasium on Wednesday May 18. The group, eight pianos and sixteen players, is a permanent unit and traces its roots to 1934 under John Crowder of the University of Montana.

Pioneer of Beaverhead Claimed by Death

Mrs. Rose Hainds 84 longtime Beaverhead resident died at her Railroad Avenue home last Wednesday night after years of declining health. Born June 7 1853 in Marquand Missouri she moved to Red Rock Montana in 1880 with Melvin Havis and two daughters later remarried Joseph Hainds of Red Rock who died twelve years ago. She lived in Dillon in recent years leaving four daughters Susan Suthard Sheridan Emma Martinell and others listed as survivors.

Beaverhead Ranchers May Get Light Power

The Rural Electrification Administration announced a rural electrification project for Beaverhead and lower Big Hole valleys in Montana. The plan extends 110 miles of line from the Jefferson Valley cooperative, starting at Silver Star and running through Twin Bridges into the valleys, bringing electricity closer to ranchers.

Lima Gunners Host Registered Shoot at Lima

Fifty gunners took part in Lima’s first registered trapshoot last Sunday with about 80 merchandise prizes. Ted Renfro topped the field with 99 in singles and 49 in handicap, George Bryant won Class B with 96, and J H Venable Jr aged 13 shot 90 to take Class B honors, as Dillon and Lima shooters faced telegraphic 26s.

Dillon Rotary members motored to Lima Monday night and joined local businessmen and ranchers for a dinner at the White cafe. Rev. Father Timothy Clifford of Lima was the evening speaker, delivering an entertaining address.

Funeral Services For Henry Wyatt Held on Thursday

Funeral services for Henry C. Wyatt, a former prominent Dillon veteran, were held Thursday afternoon at the Lutheran church with Rev. A W Nelson officiating. Military honors were rendered by Beaverhead post of the American Legion, of which he was a member.
