The Sioux chief Rain-in-the-Face, famed for frontier exploits, killed two white men at Standing Rock in 1873 or 1874 and fled in a blizzard. The couple, once lively newlyweds traveling with immigrant trains, faced friction and a visible showdown over property. A miners meeting settled the split, Jeff Davis paying $200 for the lot, Betsy joining him with a smile, the crowd toasting the newly separated pair.
