Four familiar Beaverhead area players join the State College Bobcat band for a joint concert with Beaverhead County high school on Sunday March 23 in Dillon. Local area players include Lewis Ford Lima and Harry Elser Sheridan trombones Melbourne Jackson Dillon Charles Lortz Melrose and Charles Beardslee Lima on clarinets. The Bobcat band numbers about 50 and performs under a Dillon-based director. article notes continuation on page 4.

Fourteen Bea verhead high school journalists joined the National Quill and Scroll in a ceremony at the little theatre. Principal speaker J L Mayland spoke on Freedom of the Press, noting his Montana chapter origins in 1927. The event featured L A Gregory directing bands and Stan Bradley presiding. initiates included Louise Bonnifield, Clyde Casterline, Ethel May Forrester, and 12 others with Guy Combes granted honorary membership after transferring to Roosevelt High School in Seattle.

WPA Drives January Progress on County Roads and Cemetery
Dillon area projects show WPA crews hauling gravel fencing and timber for county roads, and laying gravel for the Dillon cemetery. February ends with a license plate rush, 115 more plates sold, totaling 492 truck and 1986 passenger plates, as 15 summonses were issued for late deadlines.

The speaker urged pride in American ideals and predicted the draftees would defend liberty, then closed with hopes for their future as citizens of Montana.

Funeral for H. C. Berry Held After Tragic Shooting
Funeral services were held for Herbert A. Berry aged 32 after a gunshot wound found at his home on Washington Street. Berry had been slated to depart with a draft group but disappeared before the 6:47 train. A 30.06 rifle lay nearby with a note reading I’m sorry Herb. Police investigated the private garage as officers searched for answers.

Bulldogs Headed to Kansas City for National Tourney
The Montana State Normal College Bulldogs won the conference title with 12 wins and one loss and will depart Saturday for Kansas City to join 31 other teams in the national intercollegiate tournament. Coach Bill Straugh and 10 players will travel by car as local supporters raise funds to cover trip expenses. Wyoming claimed the Big Seven title and a playoff would have been needed if both Wyoming and Montana State Normal advanced.

Melbourne L. Jackson of Dillon, a senior in chemical engineering at Montana State College, has accepted a fellowship from the American Institute of Paper Chemistry at Appleton Wisconsin for graduate training toward a doctorate. He has been active in campus life, editing the Montana Engineer and serving in bands councils and interfraternity groups.

Mrs. L. Tower Dies in Spokane After Illness
Mary Ellen O'Brien born July 29 1894 in Sheridan Montana. She attended St Marys academy Salt Lake City and Montana Normal college and taught in Sheridan. She married Lee Tower October 12 1909 and lived in Dillon before moving to Pony then Spokane where she died Monday evening.

Recruiting Officer Short Leads Navy Enlistments in Dillon
Navy recruiting officer L. G. Short of Butte has been active during two Dillon visits. He plans to be in Dillon on the first and third Mondays and Tuesdays each month with an enlistment office in room 200 of the post office building. Alan Tait, 17, left Salt Lake City for San Diego to enter the service after passing tests. William Pederson and Robert Melton departed Dillon for Salt Lake City for final tests following preliminary exams in Butte. William Stefanie of Dillon passed his preliminary tests.

Five Volunteers Await March Service
Five men have volunteered for the March draft quota with Loren Miller of Dillon and Paul L. Morgan of Grant leading the tally to five requests. Previous enlistments include Axel Madson of Dillon Claude Freeman of Armstead and Willie Davis who returned from Arizona cotton picking to join immediately. The March quota was ten men nine whites and one colored with an additional replacement for Herbert Berry, deceased, from February.
