Livestock Situation Stresses Supplemental Feeding and Pastures
Western ranchers increasingly use supplemental feeding and irrigated pastures as native range fades during dry periods. Dairymen with dairy heifers profit from feed during the dry season, with cotton-seed cake and pellets or cubes as key supplements. Adapted pasture mixes of grasses and legumes outperform hay, with regional variations in perennial clover, ryegrass, and other species improving forage efficiency.
