Alexander Peyre, 55, Beaverhead rancher and businessman, died Saturday at Barrett hospital after a brief illness. A native of France, he came to Beaverhead County 24 years ago and operated the Dell Mercantile with his brother Earnest.
President George R. Metlen was elected to lead the Beaverhead Mining Association at the annual meeting held Friday night in the courthouse. John Collins became vice president, Bruce A. Risley secretary, and J. C. Fuller treasurer, with Risley and Fuller reelected. Directors named include R. B. Caswell, William Logan, Louis Stahl, Louis Schmittroth, and A. H. French. Notables Dr. Francis A. Thomson Carl Trauerman and August Grunert spoke on silver trends and upcoming events. Local miners plan an ore exhibit at the state convention in Bozeman.
Over sixty Dillon girls will participate in a four week free camp at Cornell Grove on the city outskirts. Mrs. C T Callahan heads the committee with Girl Scout council support and Miss Helen Doyle aiding. Activities include swimming, games, an operetta, daily camp fire cooking, and hot luncheons. Girls were registered by Dillon physicians who provided physical exams. The camp continues last year’s program.
One of the patriotic activities sponsored by the Montana Daughters of the American Revolution involves a practical interest in the Washington Memorial at Valley Forge. The Washington Memorial Chapel at Valley Forge is described as one of the greatest memorials in the world and a fitting tribute to George Washington.
James L. Kelly of Dillon was named alternate candidate as Montana State University units announce advanced honor scholarships for the 1939 1940 year at the state school of mines in Butte. Twelve students from various cities earned the scholarships, including Russell Chadwick Englewood New Jersey and Paavo Luumala Roberts among others.
With no local observance scheduled, a large number of residents motored to other points to celebrate. Butte held a statehood anniversary event, while others fished or picnicked. Dillon Country Club hosted an annual Fourth of July party at the clubhouse featuring barbecue, dancing, and fireworks. Jennings Mayland chaired the event. George M. Gos served on committees.
City Engineer Forrest Bayerd announced last Friday that work on Mountain View cemetery will resume around July 20 following WPA approval of a 20811 project. The Dillon club and City of Dillon sponsor the plan with landscaping irrigation and a rock entrance.
A large crowd gathered at Grace Methodist church in Dillon to honor Bruce Joe Metlen, Beaverhead county state representative and veteran legislator. Attendees included fellow legislators, state officials, and hundreds of local residents whose many years of service to Montana were noted as he was sent to the lower house six times.
More than 150 officers from the northern intermountain region and lower Canada are expected at a police school in Great Falls July 10 21. The event is organized with FBI cooperation and features speeches by FBI agent W G Banister Montana Idaho, State Highway Patrol Supervisor L C Boedecker former US District Attorney John L Slattery L V Snowden and P G Frazier. Separately Mr and Mrs Glen Raff welcomed a daughter Sunday in Nampa Idaho. she is the granddaughter of Mr and Mrs C P Angeroth of Great Falls.
Dillon gun club members prep for the state shoot to be held at the Butte Trap and Skeet club grounds over a three day period with five top locals in a telegraphic trophy shootoff against Missoula. The club has dominated the Montana event, with past champions and national level shooters among its ranks. Local practice last Sunday at the new traps saw Pete Westergard lead in scores.
The Rev. Dr. Duncan J. McMillan 93 died Monday in New Jersey after founding 40 mission schools in the Rocky Mountains and serving as president of the College of Montana from 1883 to 1890. He later led the New York Presbyterian church beginning in 1912 and held roles with the Home Mission board.
Earl L. Wheat, local wholesale beer distributor, reports a warehouse break in last Thursday night. The next morning two empty half gallon jugs and five broken kegs spilled beer across the floor, indicating substantial waste.
Geo O Sanford, supervisor for the Bureau of Reclamation, stated most federal reclamation projects are solvent. He noted 85 to 90 percent of the over 3 million dollars due last year was paid on schedule, with Montana projects meeting deadlines. Delinquent cases arise only where drought or market disruptions occur.
Mr and Mrs Harold Snow and family returned from a motor trip to California and other points They attended the San Francisco fair and visited Boulder Dam Zion Park and Bryce Canyon with their family May 1930.
The U S Bureau of Reclamation will inspect the Daly Spur dam site in Ryan's canyon south of Dillon during the 1940 fiscal year. Sen B K Wheeler informs the Dillon Examiner that the survey is to be undertaken with local support from the Dillon Chamber of Commerce led by John Neal after earlier funding gaps.
Bert Lawrence, Beaverhead county veteran, set a record for early enrollment in Beaverhead post of the American Legion by paying dues for 1940. Grant ranch worker J. E. Selway is his employer. T. E. Gilbert, vice commander, will lead a membership drive aiming for a record Armistice Day enrollment. With George M. Gosman elected department commander, the post expects its most active year yet. C. A. Bechler serves as post commander.
Two Seattle men allegedly used summer homes on Puget Sound as bait for customers in a Beaverhead county confidence game. Sheriff Paul H. Temple said Roy King, 38, and a companion operated in rural areas last Wednesday and were arrested by officers.
Local golfers begin the Dillon Country club annual meet with men to complete 18 holes by Friday for qualifying scores in the club championship tourney. Women’s preliminaries were held Saturday with finals set for July 9 and Elsie Cornell acting as tournament chair.
Miss Harriet E Cushman former extension poultry specialist at Montana State College will lead a Friday session at the Peter J Peterson ranch south of Dillon on Highway 91. A culling demonstration and poultry production discussion will cover current raising problems. The public is invited.
Dillon friends learned last week of the death of Mrs. Nettie Lawrence, oldest continuous resident of the lower Big Hole basin. She moved to the Bowen district in 1888 with her husband Blackwell Lawrence, after living in Dewey since 1882. Funeral services were held in Wisdom with Don Anson officiating and interment in Wisdom cemetery. Pallbearers were D. J. Stephens, J. T Armitage, Frank Ritchie, Harry Hopkins, J. P. Loss and Walter White.
