Ben Geddl, a Port land farmer, unearthed fossilized mastodon bones while prospecting at the foot of a clay bluff near the Plogeer Memorial building. The discovery, from the middle Miocene or late Pleistocene era, could place his name in scientific circles despite his nongeologist background.

Mastodon bones unearthed near Willamette river site in Oregon
Archaeologists and Albert Tozier preserve mastodon remains found by a dredge near the Pioneer Memorial, including a 27 3 4 inch long jaw or shoulder bone, a 11 percent inch vertebra, and a 12 inch tooth. Finds also include tusk sections, deer horn, mortars, a flatiron, and possible sun worshiper stones, prompting questions about prehistoric life and the glacial era in Champoeg and Oregon country.
