Nearly 100 seniors from Montana State Normal College will receive diplomas next Thursday morning at the normal college commencement exercises. A college play titled Smilin Through will be presented and a senior dinner is planned for the following Sunday.
Fines of three county officers seeking reelection raise the total to 14 candidates this week. John O. Baker, veteran county clerk and recorder, filed for the Republican nomination this morning. He was first elected in 1902 and is unopposed. Boss W. Emerick, Beaverhead’s second oldest officer by tenure, filed his petition yesterday.
Judge Henry G. Rodgers delivered a Memorial Day address to Sheridan American Legion members praising veterans and the Legion’s peacekeeping and care efforts. He traced Memorial Day’s history since the Civil War and reflected on its meaning and observance.
Beaverhead voters organize a Galen for Senator club early in the week to back Albert J. Galen. George M. Clemon presides as club president with Dillon leaders as officers and a large, growing membership reported. The same week mining leaders address Beaverhead Mining association on county affairs at the courthouse.
Wack W. Carney of the Montana fish and game commission led a courthouse hearing on a Beaverhead and Madison county petition to create the Madison Bird Refuge in the Madison National Forest. The plan envisions about 160000 acres across seven townships, with a small portion in Beaverhead county, and officials expect establishment in the near future. No protests were filed during the session.
Miss Genevieve Albertson plans to leave Friday for North Carolina to take a teaching position at a large educational institution. She is currently an instructor at the Normal College in this place.
A benefit dance and basket social will be held at Reichle next Saturday night announced by J. N. Campbell. Proceeds go to a worthy cause. The event should draw a large Dillon crowd with Fin's Melodians providing music and free coffee served.
The Dillon volunteer fire department plans boxing matches at the wool warehouse during the county fair next September. The boxing show is a featured night attraction, with inquiries pouring in from other parts of the state about Dillon’s semi centennial celebration tied to the fair.
The Buick sedan stolen from J. Anson Baxter's garage last week was found Sunday in Great Falls. The car, undamaged except for a flat tire, was abandoned on a city street after intruders forced entry despite locked doors and ignition access.
Helena The Donovan Ranch company filed articles of incorporation at Secretary of State Harmon's office to renew its charter. Based in Butte the firm lists organizers John A Donovan Jessie Donovan and Margaret Morse with capital of 100000 dollars in 100000 shares of 1 dollar each all stock subscribed.
Beaverhead county veterans honored fallen comrades with simple services at Mountain View cemetery sponsored by Beaverhead post of the American Legion. Taps sounded. graves decorated. Civil War veterans William Reed Willam Bonnifield and W. G. Blair attended. D. W. Paddock and T. E. Gilbert led a guard of honor. Reed placed flags on graves. Dillon observed Memorial Day with all businesses closed.
Committees representing several city organizations conferred with Beaverhead Mining association members Saturday about the large Montana Idaho picnic planned for Sacajawea park in August. A joint committee will meet Idaho delegates June 15 at the proposed site to finalize plans and fix the August 17 date.
Lieutenant Governor Hazel Baker and Mrs. J H Gilbert head speakers at the Beaverhead Federation convention in Dillon as delegates from nearly all county communities gather for the semi annual session.
Beaverhead county will continue its weed extermination drive started last summer after the board of commissioners granted a petition from 75 ranchers. W. J. Bierrum is named weed commissioner and will begin work immediately, meeting ranchers and planning the season focused mainly on thistles.
Hughes & McCalebs launch Beaverhead county big fish contest open to residents of Beaverhead or Madison counties. Catch a Rainbow Native or Lochleven Trout with rod and hook, dress and weigh it, up to October 1 for a share of $100 in cash and prizes.
A public meeting will be held in the council rooms at city hall tomorrow night to discuss the educational tax levy for Montana voters this year. Frank Eliel of the state board of education presides and attendees are urged to participate as the measure will be explained. The session starts at o'clock.
Governor I J E Erickson proclaims Tuesday June 17 as Good Roads Day in Montana urging communities to observe and support improvements to the highway system. The proclamation notes ongoing state efforts to expand and improve roads benefiting tourism and residents.
Beaverhead post of the American Legion plans a grand costume ball in Dillon to mark the semi centennial anniversary and the post name change to Vigilante. Prizes will honor early day figures including Bannack miners and territorial officers as the hall aims for authentic period settings.
Dillon's diamond stars beat Salmon Idaho 9 to 5 in a Memorial Day game and routed Twin Bridges 24 to 1. Berlin Gordon blanked the Idaho nine with three hits allowed and Doyle Gordon helped spark the slugging attack as Dillon piled up offense. Vandegrift pitched well for Dillon Sunday.
A drug addict entered Gosman drug store at noon wielding a lengthened lead pipe and demanded morphine. The owner complied with a small dose to avoid harm as the assailant threatened to wreck the shop. Police were alerted but the suspect eluded capture.
