Livestock Slaughter Surges in 1934 Says USDA
United States Department of Agriculture figures show 1934 cattle slaughter under Federal inspection at 13 263 296, the highest on record, up 63 percent from 1933 due largely to drought emergencies. Hog slaughter fell under Federal inspection to 43 586 254 head, with prices rising sharply. Sheep and lamb slaughter declined slightly, while overall range and pasture prospects improved with better moisture and crop conditions expected in 1935. The report predicts profitability improvements for livestock producers even as pork supplies may stay below normal.
