Campbell System Offered as Waterless Alternative in Arid States
Minneapolis Journal reports H. W. Campbell of Lincoln Nebr promotes a soil preparation method as a substitute for irrigation. Ground is worked to store a full year’s rainfall, enabling crops next year with stored moisture, using deep roots and capillary action. Trials on the Campbell system span railroads, model farms, and several western states with growing yields and railroad adoption.

Freeing Montana Soil From Alkali Through Tiling Trials
A. T. Sweet of the U.S. Bureau of Soils reports successful alkali cleansing on a 20 acre Billings tract. By underdraining with tiling and controlled flooding, alkali fell from about 1 percent to under one fifth of one percent, with surface roots and first foot remaining alkali free. Further crops will test long term productivity, and tile factory plans may reduce future costs.
