War Appetite Heavy for Motor Fuel Oil

War production has boosted U S crude oil output from 3.8 to 4.7 million barrels daily yet gasoline and kerosene shortages arise as civilian needs shrink. About 40 percent of gasoline goes to military use. A six hour flight of 1,000 planes consumes as much gasoline as tractors in a county use in a year, and a single large naval ship uses that amount in one day. The Navy reports 61 000 ships burning oil.
