Ranchers Class Machinery Repair in Progress at Beaverhead High

Machinery repair classes for ranchers and farmers run at Beaverhead County High School Shop under John Hartwig Smith-Hughes instructor. Sessions run five weeks from 7 to 10 pm on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday evenings with attendees bringing their own equipment for guided hands on work supervised by Charles Banks. No fee and participants may attend any session.

Missing Man on Sinking Ship Confirmed Dead

Beevlerhead county family learns their son Pfc. Robert J. Rott, 20, reported missing Christmas Day in Europe, was aboard a transport sunk in the European theater and not among survivors. He had been overseas about four months and served with the military police in England. He trained as Army engineer and attended Montana State Normal College after Beaverhead High School.

Dillon Man Wounded for Third Time

Pfc. John Kmenta 27 a Dillon resident was wounded in Belgium January 11, his friend reports. He already holds the Purple Heart from Luxembourg injuries in late November and has three wounds since going overseas. He joined the service two years ago and has bought $50 in war bonds monthly.

Waste Paper Drive to Continue Saturday in Jackson

Mrs Celia Wilson Jackson gore proprietor fell on ice near her home and broke an ankle. She was taken to Dillon for treatment and remains at L M Holloran home. Ms Wilsons store will be closed until she resumes duties. Dillon residents are asked to place bundles of waste paper and rags on the curb Saturday morning as the drive continues under the recreation center auspices with trucks donated by the city and driven by city drivers.

Lt. Joseph S. Hermann U S Army infantry son of Mr and Mrs Joseph K Hermann Dillon Montana died Jan 24 in a French hospital of wounds suffered in action in Belgium four days earlier He had served since Sept 15 1941 and was a Montana State College ROTC graduate later training at Fort Lewis He married Jeanne Roberts Hermann July 6 in Great Falls and was overseas since October He was born November 14 1918 in Beaverhead County and attended Beaverhead County High School Continued on page

Piano Program Presented at Dillon Rotary Meeting

Tomey Baxter presented a program at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner. Gerry Gillies Miriam Morse and duet by Gillies and Pad dock performed piano pieces. J W Rees chaired the meeting with Bernice Gleed attending as high school guest.

Dillon Man Found Slumped in Parked Car in Cold Snap

The body of 56 year old John Lee of Beaverhead county was found in a parked car near the Metlen hotel after about a week. Coroner Raymond Schwartz says Lee died of exposure during the cold snap that hit on January 19. Police and hotel staff alerted authorities after a transient couple reported the quiet figure. Lee's employer had been seeking him for days. The discovery follows the region's brutal freeze.

Beaver head County Artist Wins Northwest Watercolor Honor

Andrew Hofmeister Beaverhead County High School instructor won first prize in the Northwest Watercolor Society open show in progress Seattle since Jan 7, judged by Amelio Amero Raymond Hill and Erik Johansen. His winning piece An April Day sketched in Miles City features a dilapidated old house amid April greenery. A war bond was awarded as top prize.

Dillon Ski Club to Host Montana State Downhill Slalom 1945

Elkhorn Hot Springs will host the Montana state downhill slalom ski tournament for 1945 on March 3 and 4. The Northern Rocky Mountain Ski Association awarded the event to the Dillon Ski Club, marking the club’s first time as host. T. Lee McCracken leads the organizing committee and reports facilities for over 200 guests. entries due by February 26.

Beaverhead AAA Work For Year Summarized

Jackson boy wounded in the Pacific confirms Navy department word received by parents. Benny Arthur Johnson, chief machinist mate and son of Mr and Mrs S J Johnson of Jackson, had served in the Pacific since July last year after earlier duty on a destroyer in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. He trained at San Diego and was the first Jackson youth to enlist in the Navy in August 1942.

All officers of Vigilante Electric Co-operative were re-elected at the annual meeting held Saturday at city hall with over 100 members from Beaverhead Madison Jefferson Broadwater and Silver Bow counties in attendance. J Sidney Carkett of Butte grand high priest of Montana Royal Arch Masons will visit Dillon chapter No 8 RAM at the Masonic hall Saturday night. Dell Old-Timer Dies at Barrett Hospital

Timothy Moriarty age 77 longtime Dell resident died at Barrett Hospital Monday night after a brief illness. Born October 16 1867 in Anascual Ireland he came to the United States as a boy and was naturalized in Helena October 21 1896. Mass was said at St Rose Catholic Church by Rev Timothy Clifford and interment followed in Mountain View cemetery.

Beaverhead County 1944 AAA Program Summary

The 1944 program overseen by Lloyd Kennison chairing with J. C. Ferguson and Mark Clemon included 16 ranchers who earned $97,705.93 for completed practices. Top effort was seeding pastures totaling 212,698 pounds. phosphate applied to alfalfa and wild hay meadows reached 1,123,500 pounds. Weed control covered 1,411.9 acres, while ranch management required good range stewardship and no overutilization.

District 16 Class B Cage Tourney Heads to Normal Gym

Normal Gym will host the District 16 Class B tournament February 22 23 and 24 with Dillon Beavers defending the title from last year. Principal D L Johnson oversees preparations as Montana State Normal College gym seats larger crowds and organizers expect high action. Bleachers are being installed while teams are closely matched and schedule includes afternoon and evening games.

Beaverhead County Commissioners Hold Special Meeting

Beaverhead board of county commissioners met in extra session January 22, 1945 at 9:00 a.m. with Commissioners Henneberry Stahl Jackson and Clerk Baker present. An emergency resolution to add 9,500 dollars to the road fund budget, approved at the January 4 regular session, was read and laid on the table pending protests or recommendations.

Funeral of Mrs. Roy R. Selway Held in City

The funeral of Mrs. Roy R. Selway a long time Montana resident who died last Wednesday night was held Monday afternoon at the Brundage funeral home chapel. Rev Belle Long of the First Baptist church conducted the rites. Pallbearers included Joe Hermann Carl Guidici C. M. Casteline Fred Kerr Elza Patrick and Al Featherly. No interment was in Mountain View cemetery.
