Dillon Man Killed in Luzon Drive during World War II

Pvt. Kenneth R. Welborn, 20, of Dillon Idaho was killed in action January 17 in the Philippines just before his 21st birthday. He enlisted October 22, 1943, trained in California, served in New Guinea, and was a Beaverhead County High School graduate active in FFA and student activities. The article notes his death in a war department notification received by his parents.

Dillon High Students Rally For Paper Drive Final Push

High school students led by Joe Shaw plan a last Saturday curb collection of waste paper and rags to reach a carload quota. Principal D L Johnson urged all residents to contribute. Helpers will bundle papers. Lima and other communities may add to the total.

John F. Wyatt, once a Dillon mail carrier, now living in Beaumont, Texas, recalls witnessing Manila’s 1898 American flag raising during a Beaumont Journal front page feature. Mrs Susan Barnett Dies. Beaverhead Pioneer and Eastern Star Figure

Mrs Susan Barnett 88 longtime Beaverhead county resident and 70 year Eastern Star member died this afternoon at Barrett hospital after a brief illness. She collapsed from paralysis at home last Thursday while speaking with her daughter Mrs A S Johnson. Mizpah Chapter will lead funeral services Friday at Brundage chapel with interment at Mountain View cemetery. Born January 25 1857 in Clinton Missouri she married Coleman C Barnett and soon moved to Montana.

Lincoln Day Program At Lutheran Church Highlighted

The Beaverhead Republican Women's club sponsored a Lincoln Birthday program at the Lutheran church on Monday evening. County Attorney Lew D. Brundage gave a tribute to Abraham Lincoln and reviewed his outstanding leadership qualities. Mrs. Ruth L. Kunkel presented a book review of Jour Scott's Behind the Urals to a full-capacity crowd.

Several Dillon women joined the spring ceremonial of Tirzah temple Daughters of the Nile in Butte on Saturday. Hank Hignight Wounded in Luzon Campaign

Henry Hank Hignight, noted Dillon athlete and tank commander in the South Pacific since last May, was wounded in the shoulder by a sniper in the Luzon campaign during late January. Two letters to his wife Mrs Aubrey Hignight confirm the injury and indicate he is recovering rapidly.

Legion Units Plan Social Room at Andrus Hotel Basemen

Beaverhead post of the American Legion and its auxiliary collaborate on furnishing a club room in the Andrus hotel basement. The space will serve as a meeting place and social room for returning service men and women with pool tables card tables magazines and books planned. Lamar Hatton and D W Paddock announced the project at the city hall meeting, eight new members were initiated.

Power truck stolen in Dillon found Friday

A Montana Power service truck stolen from the residence of O T Vandegrift in Dillon Thursday night was found Friday night about two and a half miles above Dewey. The vehicle, marked with Montana Power signs, was spotted by William J Bryant as he returned from the Big Hole basin and led to Sheriff Claude Lay.

Earthquake Shakes Dillon Area Overnight

A distinct tremor was felt by residents of Dillon and nearby communities around 9 04 with stronger readings on upper floors. Lights swayed and dishes rattled though no damage was reported in Armstead and Salmon where the quake was reportedly sharper. A similar tremor occurred July 12 at 1 30 pm in the same region.

Mrs. Wim. A. Jones Dies In Seattle

Mrs. William H. Jones, 86, longtime Dillon resident, died Tuesday at 3:30 a.m. at her daughter’s home in Seattle. In failing health, her death surprised friends in Beaverhead and Madison counties. Funeral is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. from the First Lutheran Church in Dillon with Rev. Norman Benson officiating and interment in Mountain View Cemetery.

Mrs Luella Wynes Dies At Home In Dillon

Mrs Luella Wynes 50 wife of Norman Wynes of Dillon died Thursday night at 6 at her city home after a several year illness. Funeral services were held Monday at the chapel with Rev L Belle Long of the First Baptist church officiating and interment in Mountain View cemetery. Jean Stamm Named DAR Good Citizenship Girl of 1945

Beaverhead county high school senior Jean Stamm daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Stamm of Difton was chosen as DAR Good Citizenship Girl 1945 by the faculty from three candidates. Honorable mention went to Ethel Andersen and Bernice Gleed. A state winner will be drawn for Montana Good Citizenship award of $100.

Beavers Surge In Thriller To Beat Butte Central

Beavers of Beaverhead County blasted to a 49 to 37 win over Butte Central Maroons as Chuck Davis scored 27 and Joe Kelly led Central with 19 in a high tempo game. Bishop Daniels visits St James Parish in Montana diocese

The Right Rev Henry H Daniels bishop of the Montana diocese of the Episcopal church visited St James Episcopal parish over the weekend. He celebrated Holy Communion on Sunday and administered confirmation to 14 candidates. A reception followed in the St James guild hall. Monday he spoke to men and boys at a supper served by the Alma Matrons.

Police Training School to Be Held at Courthouse

Special agents of the FBI will teach a police training program at the courthouse on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. through March. Instructors Richard G. Held and R. H. Wright, with one session led by County Attorney Lew D. Brundage, will cover note taking, report writing, evidence handling, and laws of arrest and searches for city and county law enforcement officers.

Dillon Man Receives Silver Star For Gallantry

Edward Byron Orr of Dillon earned the Silver Star for gallantry in action six days before his death in Germany on January 21. A dispatch from the 95th Infantry Division Overseas describes his action during the Metz to Siegfried Line drive, where the 2nd Platoon in Beaumarais held off heavy machine gun and mortar fire just 75 yards from the village.

Lima Girl Tops Normal College Scholastic List

Louise Roush of Lima leads the first semester honors at Normal College with 17 credits and 51 grade points in the upper tenth. Nancy McLaughlin of Roundup has 15 credits and 40 points, Rachel MacDonald of Harlowton 17 credits and 45 points.
