Steamer Josephine Opens Yellowstone Navigation Frontier
In 1875 the steamer Josephine, under Capt. Grant Marsh and government charter, reached near Pompey’s Pillar and brought news that the Yellowstone River was navigable for commerce to within 30 miles of Billings. Reported by Lieut. Cols Forsyth and Grant, the river offered a viable northern trade route, but railroads soon ended through river traffic. Fort Pease was founded opposite the Big Horn mouth but Indians forced abandonment after a harsh winter and siege.
