Beaverhead county high school edged a former Beaver stars squad 26 to 25 at the Normal college gym after trailing most of the game. Kamps scored the decisive field goal in the final 10 seconds as Bayerd led the alumni with 10 points and Burgess topped the high school with nine.
A car driven by Alfred W. Cawest, Jr. of Pasadena, California, plunged from the highway near Barretts south of Dillon and landed upright in willows. Driver and two passengers Sam Cohen and B. J. Shiffman, both of Los Angeles, escaped injury. The car was not badly damaged and the men were brought to Dillon by Gilbert Hilde.
Beaverhead post of the American Legion gathered at Lima last Thursday with nearly 50 veterans attending a banquet at the White cafe. C. J. Hovren received a past commander’s button and a portrait of Geo. M. Gosman was given to him. Gosman also attended as an honor guest along with other Dillon officers.
Snow fell across Beaverhead valley drying spell ends as roads stay passable. A Canyon Resort dance near Dillon Saturday night features Frisco Baker's band and a crowd expected to attend with 15 turkeys to be given away. White Christmas forecasts lift local spirits as weather prophets note improvements.
Mr and Mrs John Judge of Polaris were visitors in Dillon on Friday, enjoying sights and meeting local residents during their trip.
George W. Lovell 69 prominent Dillon resident died Sunday at his sister Mrs. Emmy Meyers home in Highmore South Dakota. Born March 18 1870 in Iowa he moved to Dillon in 1906 and ran a barber shop after a year with Ed Farnsworth. He later sold the shop and pursued civic service including Beaverhead County Fair Board membership and harness racing ventures. He was a Mason with Dillon Lodge 16 A F and A M and Dillon Chapter 8 R A M and belonged to St Elmo...
Christmas vacation has released students from Dillon's schools until Tuesday Jan 2. The Montana State Normal college and training school begun recess, with winter classes set to resume Jan 3 and new student registration on Jan 2. Beaverhead County High School also closes for the holiday ahead of moving into the new $320,000 high school.
Beaverhead county high school's new gym opens Friday and Saturday, Dec 29 and 30, hosting Pocatello, Idaho in two games. The $320,000 facility begins services after Christmas break with a school band led by L A Gregory attending.
Members of the Dillon Ski club held a field day at their ski tow and slide at Elkhorn Springs Sunday. They reported three to six inches of snow in the area and expected more fell since. Kenneth Wheat supervised the work while E. E. Hazel served coffee.
Mrs Ruth Dart found a large butterfly in kindling brought into the house from outside on Monday. The insect resembled the regular summer variety with big brown and orange spots.
The American Legion auxiliary dance at City Hall Saturday night attracted a large audience. A prize waltz was won by Mrs. Louis Schmittroth and Paul Stahl Sr. with a purse from Ebel's and pajamas from McCracken's for Stahl. E. W. Bond claimed the door prize blanket from J C Penney. Mrs. Waldron Boger received a Vaughn & Ragsdale bed spread. Judges included Mrs. Ross Hill, Jackson, Whitney Gorman, and D V Paddock.
Two Dillon students were selected for the picked orchestra and chorus at Montana State College, which gave the final public concert of the year on December 17. Directors were L. E. Opp. Mary Dawn Warner played tympani and sang alto, Melbourne Jackson played clarinet in the orchestra.
Dillon churches present Christmas observances. The Baptist church opened with the pageant The Birth of Our Saviour on Sunday. St. Rose's Church schedules Christmas day masses at midnight nine AM and 10:30 AM with Benediction after the high mass. The augmented choir will sing Theo LaHache's Pro Pace at the two high masses on Christmas and on New Year's day. The midnight service opens with old carols, continuing on page 6.
Gov Roy E Ayers announced a broad inquiry into Montana University at Missoula. The state board of education set January 15 for a public hearing inviting faculty to present complaints or charges against university executives. The hearing will review the investigation findings.
Dillon Rotary heard a Beaverhead County High School triple quartet sing Christmas carols under Miss Mary Castles at the Train cafe. Alice Davis accompanied. George Stewart spoke on The Future of the Future Farmers, detailing farm debt and subsidies, and the need to restore agriculture’s place in the economy.
Mr and Mrs Fred Nelson of Jackson visited Dillon on Saturday with a brief social trip.
Otto A. Schulz of Sheridan wins the Montana flyer championship at Sheridan after a coin toss ties him with William Gleed of Lirha and Dr. Lee Smith of Butte. All three shot 21 birds, one of the lowest winning scores, as pigeons were exhausted and no shoot off could determine a single winner. Schulz previously won in 1934. Ted Renfro of Dell and Herman Peterson of Dillon failed to place this year.
Paul Temple was elected high priest of Dillon chapter No 8 Royal Arch Masons at the annual election in the Masonic hall. He succeeds Bert Megquier, with officers named including Dale E. Metlen, W. G. Squires, W. T. Scully, Bert Megquier, W.E. Stinson, H. B. Mulkey, John Troupe, Claude Lay, and A. A. Elliott. Harris Opp and Matt Kay conducted the installation. Bert Megquier received a past high priest jewel.
