Montana Gulch Tomb of Comstock and His Lost Fortune
The tale recounts Comstock, owner of the famed Comstock lode, who earned only eleven thousand dollars from the vast Nevada strike that yielded about 850 million. It also tells how Montana settler Charles Corn killed a large buck in Alder Gulch after a wrestling bout, securing the carcass with a bowie knife. The piece surveys Comstock’s rise and decline, his place in mining lore, and the legends surrounding the early discovery of the lode in the American West.
