Tax Commission Stresses Need for Permanent Body and Tax Reform
Montana’s state tax commission urges creation of a permanent three member tax commission, shifts from general to classified property tax, and a constitutional amendment to place duties with the tax panel. It cites a $2.5 billion property base and revenue needs of about $22 million, warning of revenue losses from new prohibition effects and existing mill rates. The report highlights widespread assessment inequality across counties and property categories, arguing full cash value is misapplied and ununiform practice persists.
