Steel bids limited as Montana buys steel despite lack of offers

The Montana highway department secured 128 dollars worth of steel after a first bid call drew no responses. A second invitation to 14 firms drew one reply, from Paper-Calmenson Co. of St. Paul, which received the order. Separately, sea otters had not been seen off Southern California for 21 years until a herd of 100 was reported off Monterey in 1938.

Fetterman Massacre Retold Through Survivor’s Confession

The historical account recalls the 1866 Fetterman battle where 81 men died in an ambush. Chief American Horse later claimed to have killed Captain Fetterman, and the fort at Fort Phil Kearny faced siege conditions as Carrington planned a risky recovery mission. The narrative contrasts orders ignored with brutal battlefield evidence and questions the strategy of relying on a small force against the Sioux. The piece ends by condemning the folly of assuming force could overwhelm a vast hostile nation.

D B Robertson, head of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engine Men, argues in the union magazine that the St. Lawrence waterway poses great danger to U S safety.
