Lawrence Jack will replace Uncle Ed in the bias column. Ed Stoltz is no longer with the syndicate, and the column will continue with a new regular writer.
Secretary Ickes announced the duck season opens October 1 with a 60 day season and a 10 bird daily bag. Prohibitions on bait or live decoys remain, as does a ban on using cattle horses or mules as blinds. Shooting hours run from sunrise to 40 minutes after sunset.
Beaverhead High School athletes received new football uniforms last week. Coach D. L. Johnson says seven-game schedule includes trips to Butte on Sept. 13 and Bozeman on Oct. 10, with all home games at night. Returners Mizell Holden and Ray Conger lead a mixed lineup with several hopefuls hoping to bolster the squad.
Harry Williams was the burglary victim last Thursday night when a man entered his South Flantic Street home and allegedly took $35. Mr and Mrs Williams were in a room adjoining the rage room as the intrusion occurred. The intruder fled into darkness before escape. No clue to the suspect’s identity has been found.
A last minute change cancels the Cavalcade of Baseball at the fairgrounds tomorrow night. The traveling organizers cannot attend as scheduled. A feature game will instead be played between the Dillon All-Stars and Carmel's from Anaconda, featuring the standout players from the season.
E H Wade 63 of Seattle died suddenly Sunday afternoon at his sister Mrs A A Elliott 6835 South Atlantic likely from a heart attack. A Dixon native he lived in Dillon years and was active in baseball. Survived by sister mother brother in Seattle a son and daughter in California and another sister in Kalispell. Pallbearers listed: Sylvester Hirschman Paul Stahl Jr Chas Hume Berness Farrell Amos Elliott Jr Sid Johnson.
Kenneth Dilley has been assigned to Company A, 26th Battalion, Engineer Replacement Center at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. Gilbert Hilde, from Beaverhead County, was accepted at Missoula induction center and will move to Fort Lewis before final assignment.
George Opp 74 longtime Dillon resident and former justice of the peace died Sunday after a lengthy illness. Born March 24 1867 in Framers Retreat Indiana he moved to Montana in the early 1880s and served as Dillon city councilman for two terms. He spent the past 20 years as township justice of the peace and was active in politics. Survived by widow four sons Harris Earl Fred Lester a daughter Mrs Burle Green and three grandchildren. funeral at Brundage funeral home this afternoon at 2 with Rev J A Meeke officiating.
Mrs. Richard Evans and her sons are visiting relatives at Roberts Idaho. The trip includes time with extended family and local contacts in the community.
Ray Jones receives patents for plaques honoring service members, with photos and unit and branch details. County forecloses mining land linked to the National Boston Montana Mines after a court order. sale to A H Bohlin of New York City subject to Beaverhead County lien, with a tentative bid around 20000.
F. E. Canning, of the Dillon airways station, left for Walla Walla to operate a United States Airways communication station. He will take hourly weather observations for the U S communications system and the radio range will run continuously. Canning will assist with the voice communication portion of the system.
Sheriff Temple strutted around the courthouse wearing a tanned buckskin jacket with beadwork and fringe from Shoshone Arthur Tendray of Blackfoot Idaho. He asked to be called Chief, a nickname likely at the Law Officers convention starting tomorrow.
Ruth Harrison a University of Montana music school graduate will replace Mary Castles Trumbull and teach music and English. Beulah McNeil will fill the vacancy left by Ethel Anderson. McNeil graduated from Defiance College in 1930 and has done graduate work at Ohio State Maryland Oregon State and Montana.
Dillon public schools will reopen Sept 8 at 9 oclock after summer repairs. New staff include Nellie Wilson replacing Elsie Grime in the primary building and John Julia McMahan taking the first grade post. Bagley building faculty features Ruth Phelps and Paul L. Anderson among others.
Conrad Orr, Bea verhead County High School principal, submitted his resignation to the school board this morning. The board accepted it, effective immediately. He plans to move to Missoula to join his father in real estate business. no replacement plans were announced.
Harry Gilbert was in town Friday from his ranch near Alder. He made a brief appearance and spoke with locals about community concerns and upcoming events.
Dillon hosts the annual law officers convention with registration at the Andrus hotel where delegates receive leather poke o nuggets. A business session at Elks hall includes welcomes by Mayor Bert Megquire and Lovitt I. Westlake. Friday features Vigilantes Days reenactment and sports events culminating in a queen coronation.
James Kelly, son of Mr and Mrs J E Kelly, is stationed at Camp Roberts near Paso Robles California after induction at Missoula as a selective service draftee. William Bayerd, son of Mr and Mrs Forest Bayerd, is also at Camp Roberts in the camouflage division. A Beaverhead county youth has been assigned to the Ordinance Replacement center Fort Leonard Wood Missouri according to today’s word.
Postmaster Harry Andrus addressed the weekly Rotary meeting at the Andrus hotel dining halls detailing the national defense savings plan. He noted its simplicity and government efforts to avoid high pressure tactics while inviting citizens to support defense via federal securities. Hazel announced the club’s 25th anniversary celebration for Sept. 6 and an official visit by Gov. Owen O. Speer in October.
E. R. Hilger, operator of the local creamery, shows an eight pound Rainbow trout from the Beaverhead river caught last Sunday. The fish measures about three-ax handles long and a couple of hands high, a big catch for the week. Visit the creamery to hear the full tale from Mr. Hilger.
In Lewistown the annual softball tourney saw Peterson's Ranchers defeat a local outfit 22 to 0 to edge toward the quarter finals while rained out Saturday night after a 7 to 1 win over the Butte All Stars. Bozeman Oaks did not appear for the original 18 team entry. McGovern exited after the first inning.
Beaverhead County High School starts fall term on September 2 with enrollment book issuance and schedule clearances. Two vacancies will be filled at the upcoming school board meeting. Mary Castles and Ethel Anderson resign as music and home economics instructors. Principal Conrad Orr returns to office this week after a South Dakota vacation with his family.
