The three day Montana Peace officers convention announced a full program in Dillon from August 28 to 30. Events include a welcome address by Bert Megquier and a response by Lovitt I Westlake, pistol shoot finals, a Cavalcade of Baseball at the fairgrounds, Vigilantes Days reenactment at Bannack, and public invitation to attend.
Summer session honor roll at the Montana State Normal College was announced by school officials. The list includes 16 students from Dillon Butte Red Lodge and other towns who earned the top ten percent of grade points per credit across six or nine week terms.
Mr and Mrs K B Kizer arrive as new residents with Mr Kizer employed at the Examiner office. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from Montana State University this summer.
The Army Engineers plan a 100000 acre training base near West Yellowstone in the Henrys Lake region to house 30000 men. Construction hinges on funds and War Department authorization. Civilian architects George Shanley and J Van Teylingen of Great Falls assist the preliminary work.
Three hundred Chinese pheasants were released in Beaverhead county last week by Beaverhead sportsmen's association members. The birds, donated by the Butte Anglers' Club, were hatched at Ormen Rock hatchery near Divide. Distribution was aided by Lester Barton and Charles Price.
Fifty seven farmers and stock men obtained 42 Federal Land Bank loans and 50 commissioner loans totaling 424 500 for the year ending June 30. The Bozeman group serves Beaverhead Broadwater Gallatin Jefferson Madison Meagher and Park counties with the Bozeman office. Most loans refinance existing debts at lower rates, some finance initial farm purchases.
Rotary club members in the Andrus hotel dining hall heard Dr R D Curry discuss his attendance at the Portland Oregon Conference of Dentists. He noted many eminent clinicians and rapid progress in the field, while chairman Harold Snow presented a crossfire question about Axis powers with Albert Erickson commenting on Japan and Italy amid World War II headlines.
The Dillon softball league announces its second annual banquet will be held at St James guild hall on August 19. Mayor and county commissioners will be guests of honor as Carl Olson serves as toastmaster and team representatives give short talks. Over 100 attended last year.
Beaverhead 4-H calves excelled in the baby beef show at Great Falls, with two in the choice class and four in good class, plus one in medium. James Hartwig’s Rainbow placed fourth in open fat steer, and Blocky shown by Billy Harrison also placed in the choice class. The Beaverhead group earned a county fourth and boys won barn prizes. calves sold for 12 to 13.5 cents a pound.
Robert Atwood was sentenced to one year in the state prison at Deer Lodge by Judge Henry G. Rodgers after pleading guilty to forgery. He cashed a check at a Wisdom store and had no prior record. The sentence is lighter than prior similar cases.
W. W. Hawkins reports 718 pounds of scrap aluminum gathered in the county campaign. Donations were sorted and pounded at the First National Wool Warehouse before shipment to Butte as the regional assimilation point. Assisting members were Mrs. Earl Opp and E. W. Bond.
B M Anderson assistant secretary of the American Hereford association will judge the Montana futurity class of Herefords at the annual bull show and sale announced by Bernard Williams manager. The show is set for October 26 and 27 in Helena. Anderson is a nationally known Hereford judge and Williams says his services are a valuable asset.
A flash flood washed out about 100 feet of the main line on the Oregon Short Line division of Union Pacific near Daly's curve and stretching to Gallagher Creek. Hay on the John Ney ranch was destroyed and buildings endangered as waters surged. pass-line service was established with repairs expected today using several section crews.
Raleigh Shields, deputy game warden for the Big Hole area, arrested Albert Terry of Butte last Friday and brought him to Dillon on a charge of fishing without a license. He entered a plea of guilty on arraignment before Judge Louis Stahl and was fined $27.50. He was sentenced to serve 13% days in the county jail for failing to pay the sum.
John T. Orr returns from Helena where he served in the Templar escort for the funeral of John G. Brown. Orr is captain general of the Grand Commandery of the Knights Templar.
Norman C. Johns proprietor of the local Maytag store was operated on last night for appendicitis. Hospital officials report the appendectomy was successful and he is recovering nicely.
City council approves a preliminary budget showing operating expenses of 29642.62 dollars, down 2817.24 from last year, with a 17.5 mill tax levy unchanged from 1940 41. Funds are set for general street library cemetery and fire departments while a district oiling plan is tabled amid weather concerns and a Husky company service station permit is issued.
Sheriff’s officers seek two young men who escaped from the state hospital for the insane at Warm Springs last week. One is 31 years old, 114 pounds, blue eyes, brown hair with a half inch scar under the right eye. The other is 30 years old, 148 pounds, 5 feet 7.5 inches, blue eyes, brown hair with a half inch scar over the left eye. Contact the sheriff’s office if seen.
Southwestern Montana Shrine club hosts a Sunday picnic at Dillmont park on Aug 17. A Big Hole steer from Herman Peterson ranch will be barbecued with coffee cream sugar ice cream and beef sandwiches provided. Contests baseball games and band music featured. Meals served 12 1:30 and 4:30 6. Master Masons and families urged to attend. Bring knives forks spoons and any extra items.
J. G. Diamond, secretary of the state subcommittee on farm labor, says Montana faces no serious general labor shortage for the 1941 crops though local counties may see shortfalls. He urges farmers to use county employment offices to direct transient labor as harvest progresses, with offices in the county courthouse and the James' Phillips office near the Andrus hotel.
Funeral rites for Mrs. Carl Beardslee longtime Lima resident were held at the Lima Methodist church with Rev. Leonard Thompson presiding. The Brundage funeral home led arrangements. She leaves her husband and two nephews along with brothers Charles Hutchins of Nez Perce Idaho and Charles Beardslee of Lima and is a Royal Neighbors of America member.
E M Birley state director said registrants may appeal any local board classification and no one may deny that privilege. Local boards and appeal agents must protect registrants rights regardless of perceived merit. Those dissatisfied may appeal to the board of appeals and no authority may hinder a case review. Kiwanis club announces 17 nominations for the Baseball Queen pageant to be held August 28. Early entries include Dorothy Ann Davis Ethel Mary Forrester Margaret Gaddie Dorothy Ann Gosman Betty Blythe Stephan Chickie Ross Judy Ann Chapman. new nominees Joanne Deputy Peggy Howard Barbara Holloran Mary Fuller Catherine Brundage Elizabeth Wilkinson Marjorie Decker Helen Hoernig Hetty Harrison Helen Hasquet. Each nomination adds 1000 free votes. deadline is midnight tonight.
Last rites were conducted Friday afternoon at the Brundage chapel for Mrs. Gabrilla Mudd. Reverend Belle Long of the Baptist church officiated with interment in Mountain View cemetery. Pallbearers named: Jack Deputy Earl Wheat George Gosman Guy Gray Fred Woodside Ted Woodward.
Gilbert Hilde of 211 North Pacific is the only Beaverhead county draftee in this month’s selective service quota. He will leave August 18 for the induction station at Missoula, undergo a final physical at Fort Missoula, then be sent to Camp Lewis Washington. Mr and Mrs H M Warner were visitors in Butte last week.
Sheriff’s force renovates an old Dillon Bannack mail and freight coach for its last showing at the state peace officers convention later this month. The coach arrived earlier this summer and three historic coaches will be overhauled for a parade pageant. Other horse-drawn vehicles may join the display as representatives from nearly every county are expected.
The county budget shows a 6566.23 increase over last year while income remains unchanged. General fund leads with 85253.64, roads 49261.53, poor 33908.14, bridge 19414.20, fair 1515.36, emergency relief 21668.35, and poor fund debt reduction 2222.40. General mill levy is 11.97, roads 5, poor 6, bridge 2, fair 0.46, relief 4.29, reductions 0.28.
