Beaverhead county's tax levy for 1939 remains 22 mills for county purposes, with total levy increasing 3 mills to 25 mills due to high school taxes. The board of commissioners fixed the levy, setting general fund, road fund, poor fund, and local taxes with detailed appropriations and reserves.
Mrs. Margaret Kruljac wife of Adolph Kruljac and Beaverhead valley matron died at her ranch home south of Dillon after a long illness. She was 45, born in Austria and came to the United States in 1910. Survived by her husband seven Dillon children and other relatives. funeral at St. Rose Catholic church. interment Mountain View cemetery. Rosary said at the ranch home.

Gwendolyn M. Mitchell and Bess Vera Stone of Butte tie for first with three grade points per credit in a 12 credit program. Robert M. Hamilton of Eureka places third, Clair B. Bartholomew of Missoula fourth.
Gov. Joseph B. Poindexter of Hawaii arrived in Dillon on Monday to rest with his Dillon friends and brothers E. L. and Dr. F. M. Poindexter. He is en route to Honolulu after talks in Washington on territorial issues and Hawaii at the New York World's Fair Hawaiian Day event.
Dillon and Lima Masons depart for the Grand Lodge of Montana meeting in Great Falls with Beaverhead miners on display later heading to Bozeman for the Mining Association convention. The Beaverhead exhibit, organized by B A Risley and William Logan, includes more than a ton of ore and minerals and has drawn attention in Dillon.
Beaverhead 4-H Livestock club members showcased ten baby beef calves at the Northern State fair in Great Falls. James Hartwig won first in his Angus weight class, John Hartwig took third, and the Beaverhead entries averaged $110 per head with bids up to 15 dollars per pound for James Hartwig’s prize Angus. Calves sold through Wolfe Langman Co. under First National Bank of Great Falls sponsorship. County Agent Bernard Williams and Margaret Ann Ames also attended.
The formal opening of Morrison cave is postponed to September 1 while the road from the Three Forks-Butte highway is completed and made safe for visitors. The lighting system will not be finished by opening day but the cavern will be in perfect condition with visitors guided by flashlights.
Open seasons on wildfowl set by state and federal commissions. The federal duck season in Montana and Wyoming runs 45 days from Oct 22 to Dec 8 with a daily bag limit of 10 and a possession limit of 20. When canvasback redhead bufflehead or ruddy ducks are included, no more than three of these species may be taken. Montana’s 1939 season begins Sept 17 with a one day open season on upland birds, permitting three birds per hunter.
Dillon city council set the current year levy at 17.5 mills. General 10.5, library 1, cemetery 1, volunteer fire 2, streets and alleys 3. Taxable valuation rises to 896,895 with a $11,373.23 year end cash balance.
Carl Dickey of New York, son of J. H. Dickey of this city, left the ill fated City of San Francisco streamliner at Ogden Saturday hours before it crashed near Carlin, Nevada. He spent the morning with Dr. E A Betts of Pennsylvania State College, praised as the wreck’s outstanding hero.
The Dillon Elks drum and bugle corps will host its best attended dance of the season at Dillmont park to raise funds for travel to the state meeting in Livingston and defend the Montana state championship won at Anaconda last year. Prizes for lucky tickets and a novelty parade are planned.
Englehart Lieberg of Helena named U. S. marshal for Montana by Federal Judges James H. Baldwin and Charles N. Pray. He was chief deputy U. S. marshal for years and will hold until a successor is appointed and confirmed. Crawford assumed office Sept 1, 1938 after Sid Willis resigned. Roosevelt had not secured confirmation. Lieberg announced no personnel changes while acting.
Dillon Rotary club speaker Norman Henry described his May 20 departure from Dillon and an eighteen state and District of Columbia tour including Mammoth Cave Kentucky Lincoln Memorial Stephen Collins Foster birthplace and plantation, the national Capitol, Supreme Court, Mt. Vernon and more.
Sheriff receives word from Fort Pillow warden that William Cunningham an escaped convict from Ripley prison is en route to Dillon to be returned. Cunningham held on second degree assault charges after an altercation at the Clodhingham ranch near Jackson. He allegedly struck James Kennedy with a mower blade and brandished a knife. Kennedy hospitalized in Dillon for injuries.
L Ott Gordon of Dillon, Montana West district deputy of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, attended a Rocky Mountain states conference in Ogden with Grand Exalted Ruler Henry C. Warner. Gordon, the first Dillon Elk named to the post, joined deputies from Montana and nearby states to review the Elks national program and lodge conduct for the year.
