Dillon Elks Plan State Convention In Livinston
Dillon lodge discussed sending delegates to the state Elks convention in Livinston on August 24 25 and 26. E W Johnson and William Lloyd were elected delegates with John W Selvidge as alternate. The drum and bugle corps will compete and make daily exhibitions, with opening night first appearance. The corps trains regularly and aims to defend its state title.

Melrose Man Claimed by Illness
Burr Heraeld Lively 68 longtime Melrose resident and mining figure died last Thursday in a Butte hospital after a brief illness. Born in Granby Missouri he moved to Montana at age ten and spent most of his life in Melrose with stints in Coeur dAlene mining. Survived by wife son Leonard daughter Mrs Roy Evans three grandchildren sister in law and nieces and nephews. Funeral Saturday from the family home with interment in Melrose cemetery.

Dillon Exceeds at Southwestern District Sportsmen Picnic
Scores of Dillon residents joined six to eight thousand Montanans at Goughs Corner for the southwestern district sportsmen’s picnic. Dillon girls swept three of five bathing beauty awards with Elsie Lloyd first Merle Schmittroth third and Katherine Mooney fourth. Jolly of Butte took second and Shirley Martin of Deer Lodge was fifth. Herman Peterson and Pete Westergard tied for second in a 50 target trap shoot with Peterson winning the tiebreaker. Westergard also won the Class B pistol shoot and led Beaverhead County’s district committees for trapshooting and bathing beauty events. Dillon’s American Legion nine.

Sickle Sickle Used As Weapon At Ranch Altercation
William Cunningham, a Big Hole basin ranch hand, was jailed on a felony charge after an altercation at the Claude Lapham ranch near Jackson. He allegedly struck James Kennedy with a mower sickle nearly severing an ear and cutting Kennedy's hand, and Kennedy said a knife was brandished earlier. Kennedy received treatment in Dillon.

Mining Congress official to address Montana convention
Julian Conover secretary manager of the American Mining Congress will speak at the Mining Association of Montana fifth annual convention in Bozeman August 18 19 after which he tours Yellowstone National Park. He will also address the national convention in Salt Lake City on the topic National Laws as They Affect Mining and later advise lawmakers on mining related bills. Camps At Elkhorn Run For WPA Youth Program
Two boys camps will be conducted at Elkhorn Springs under the WPA recreation program in Dillon this summer. Sessions run Aug 20–24 and Aug 24–27 for ages 9 to 16, with 20 boys per group. Each attendee pays 2.50 for meals and swimming fees apply.

Pair Taken in Custody After Jackson Affray
Mrs. Laura Sullivan and A M Boyle were arrested by Sheriff Paul H Temple and Undersheriff John Troupe after a Friday night altercation in Jackson. Boyle was stabbed and treated at Barrett hospital Dillon before a 90 day county jail sentence for disturbance. Sullivan pleads not guilty to second degree assault and is jailed on 500 bond. Sullivan fled toward Dillon in a car but was captured.

Normal College Commencement Honors 1939 Montana grads
Montana State Normal College held graduation ceremonies for the August class in the college auditorium. Twenty seniors earned bachelor of education degrees and eighteen received diplomas, with President Sheldon Davis announcing the honor roll and presenting candidates. Beaverhead 4 H club boys exhibit ten Hereford Angus and Short horn calves at the North Montana State Fair in Great Falls this week. Exhibitors include John and James Hartwig Otha Graham Rudy Platt LaRue Harold Cantrell and Charles Green. Calves on feed since winter were shown at Carl Hartwig ranch near Dillon last Friday to many ranchers and 4 H supporters.

Residence Halls At College Begin Yearly Repairs
The residence halls close for their annual renovation ahead of the September 25 term start. Miss Anna Moser arrives around September 1 to oversee inquiries about housing and jobs. The swimming pool schedule remains, except it will be drained August 12 and closed until days after autumn quarter opens. An art department exhibit runs this week with visitor hours posted.

Dillon Creamery guest speaks on dairy industry at Rotary
Ed Hilger of the Dillon Creamery addressed the Dillon Rotary Club detailing milk season variations from pasture conditions and the goals of pasteurization. He described milk testing and regional butterfat price bases, legal manufacture requirements, and storage notes for butter. He explained cheese ice cream and buttermilk production processes and claimed Montana dairies largely exceed state limits.

Engineer Reports Lima Dam Inspection Findings
Officers of the Water Users Irrigation Co met at B A Risley's office and heard Nicholas Blindauer report on a survey along the river from Lima dam to Barrett's station. The survey was by the United States Geological Survey with state water conservation board engineers. another water flow check will be made this month.

County Reports Highlight Strong Finances and School Districts
Two annual county reports by Clerk and Recorder Albert S Baker and Superintendent of Schools Margaret Sweeney show Beaverhead counties finances as excellent with economical operation across departments. The clerk and recorder notes top finances among state counties and the superintendent reports good financial ratings for most school districts. The board of commissioners will meet this month for its final equalization session and to set next year tax levy. The August regular session of the commissioners occurred this week.

Power Firm Plans Dillon Electric System Upgrade
Montana Power crews begin a two month reconstruction, upgrading lines and poles in Dillon. Local manager Edwin R Buck says eight linemen will rehabilitate lines along streets and alleys, check read-ins, inspect poles, and install new ones as needed.

Native trout planted in Beaverhead county streams
Over 25,000 native trout from Maiden Rock hatchery were delivered to Beaverhead county for distribution in streams and lakes. The Beaverhead Sportsmen's association, via Butte Anglers Club president William Carpenter, arranged the planting with stock kept in a Forest Service trough at Glen Lyons ranch to reach inaccessible waters.
