Beaverhead county commissioners met in special session to appraise all lands acquired by tax deed and other property eligible for sale. The sale is set for September 14 at 10:00 a.m. Descriptions and appraisals appear in today's Examiner.
Beaverhead county residents attended state gatherings with Dillon figures like John T. Orr elected deputy grand master of Montana A F and A M and Edwin Fredlund named grand master at Great Falls. Other Dillon Masons and Mizpah Order of Eastern Star members attended the event along with Montana Pioneer Society participants.
Two officers from other states returned to their homes Saturday, taking with them a pair of prisoners arrested by Beaverhead county officials. O P Caldwell warden of the Kort Pillow prison at Ripley Tennessee arrived Thursday to take charge of William Cunningham, an escaped convict from the prison. Cunningham waived extradition. He escaped while serving a term for grand larceny. Cunningham was held here on an assault charge arising from an altercation with James Kennedy, fellow ranch laborer, on a Big Hole basin ranch recently. Sheriff Cal Rose of Pampa Texas took custody of John Smith, wanted in Pampa. Smith was arrested by county officers here in connection with the theft of machinery belonging to the Prohosky brothers on Horse Prairie.
Mr and Mrs Robert Lee announce the birth of a daughter at Barrett hospital this morning. She is the first grandchild for both Dr J D Lee and Mrs Lee and Mr and Mrs Dan Tovey, the baby’s maternal grandparents.
More than 300 people from Dillon and nearby towns attended the first field mass at Dillmont park under St. Rose parish. Rev. Father F. X. Lechner officiated with help from nearby priests. A 20 voice choir plus St. Patrick's Butte provided music, directed by Mrs. Charlotte Ballard. After Mass a picnic and free coffee followed, with a sports program in the afternoon. Prizes went to the Joe Rebish family for largest family and to the Sullivan family of Trask for traveling 82 miles. Plans call for annual field mass, with C. T. Callahan leading the committee and a long list of volunteers assisting.
Otha Graham placed fourth in the agricultural livestock judging contest at the Northern Montana fair in Great Falls. Nearly ninety 4-H club members entered. Beaverhead field placed ninth in the team judging. Governor Poindexter departed for Hawaii from Dillon after visiting his brothers and enjoying Montana trout and an outdoor steak fry.
Beaverhead county ranch operators in the 1939 range conservation deferred grazing must notify the county agricultural conservation office before August 31 to begin or complete deferred grazing. Notices help determine compliance and prompt payments. all practices must end by November 15 with a 15 day appeal window.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Hocking and daughters Carroll Ann and Elaine of Alvarado California visited the home of Mr and Mrs Fred Dart over the weekend.
Dillon Elks drum and bugle corps, defending state champions, will attend the state convention in Livingston from tomorrow through Saturday. The competition is Saturday night under flood lights. this is the third year the corps has entered the state meet. Personnel includes drums Harold Murray and Emery Smith, and bugles William Mitchell and William Koenecke, with Kennedy Wheat directing. The group recently staged an exhibition drill in the business district and followed with a dance at Dillmont park, drawing praise from spectators.
Frank Robson aged 73 collapsed at his ranch near Point of Rocks last Wednesday afternoon after dismounting a horse. He suffered a heart attack and died, with a son Harvey and a daughter Mrs Allan Dean surviving. Funeral held Friday at Brundage chapel with Rev Paris E Wells officiating, burial in Mountain View cemetery.
Mrs. Herman Schwab formerly Miss Marguerite Collins daughter of Mr and Mrs John Collins arrives from Madison Wisconsin where she recently earned a degree She plans to stay several days then accompany her husband to Billaville where he is an instructor
Congressman J. Thorkelson, returning from Washington, addressed the Dillon Rotary Club Monday night warning of mounting indebtedness and communistic trends. He urged voter engagement and said Congress exceeds authority, calling for greater public involvement in government affairs. The event was chaired by T. E. Gilbert with several local guests in attendance.
John Hendricks aged 70 was found dead in his Hogan's Alley cabin yesterday at noon believed to have died of natural causes. He was born in Bowling Green Kentucky on September 24 1868 and had worked as a herder in the area for years. Authorities think he died 18 to 20 hours before discovery and they could not locate two surviving brothers.
The Misses Margaret and Rosanne Callahan returned Sunday from Idaho Falls after a two week visit with relatives.
Montana's tourist travel rose last week with about 1,600 cars entering daily per the state highway commission. Highway ports reported 1,319 cars daily while U S customs stations logged 2,500 cars weekly from Canada.
The Rev. Victor Lewis of Gillette Wyoming has accepted a call to St James Episcopal church and will arrive with his wife and two children about next Tuesday. He succeeds the Rev H N Tragitt who resigned to take a pulpit in California and later moved to Minot North Dakota. The incoming rector has led the Church of the Holy Trinity in Gillette for seven years and is a University of Toronto graduate.
Over the past week Beaverhead county received 40,000 rainbow fingerlings released in the Beaverhead river under Deputy Game Warden Charles Price. Anaconda hatchery also sent 60,000 rainbow fry planted in Armstead rearing pond. A further 40,000 fingerlings from Anaconda hatchery are to be planted in Big Sheep Creek soon with continued Montana hatchery support aiding Beaverhead streams.
Construction continues at the new Beaverhead County High School with most large rooms plastered or ready for plastering. The gym roof is complete and ceiling work proceeds while the auditorium walls rise. Stage concrete nears completion and windows, including large entrance blocks, are installed as electrical plumbing and heating progress in step with overall plans.
A car driven by Mrs. Bert Smith of Nampa Idaho collided with an electric pole on Highway 91 near the Normal college Friday morning. Passengers Mrs. Smith Mrs Frank Nicol and Melvin Robson were treated for bruises while C A Robson was uninjured. Harvey Williamson of Wellsville Utah dodged injury when a truck dragged a pole into its path. Investigated by Highway Patrolman Robert Wright and City Policeman John Peareth.
First of two recreation camps conducted at Elkhorn Springs since Saturday under WPA summer program leader Robert Holloran. Sponsored by Dillon Chamber of Commerce, nine boys joined hikes games swimming and Boy Scout merit badge work, with tents donated by Harold M Warner and Joe Mulkey.
The U S department of agriculture reports Montana 1939 wool output at 26 6 million pounds, above last year 25 245 million but below the 10 year average 31 968 million. About 2 8 million sheep shorn at 9 5 pounds per fleece. farmers expect a larger clip next year as herds rebound from 1936 1937.
Paul Summerfield twenty was arrested at Lima Wednesday morning by Sheriff Paul Temple and Patrolman Roth after escaping Rigby Idaho jail a few hours earlier. He had sawn his way out about 4 o clock Thursday morning and six hours later was taken from a train by Beaverhead officers with Sheriff Cal Rose of Pampa Texas. Summerfield was returned to Rigby authorities at the Idaho border.
Fred R. Chapman and Hoy E. Morse enjoyed a fishing excursion in the upper reaches of a northern country. They traveled by boat and reported good catches, with the outing described as a peaceful day on the lake.
