Manuel Lisa and the Fortunes of the Missouri Fur Trade
In the early nineteenth century Manuel Lisa became a central figure in the western fur trade based in St. Louis. With partners Morrison and Menard he organized expeditions up the Missouri, established Fort Manuel, and built a bustling trade network despite hostile tribes. Lisa later led the Missouri Fur Company, aided by General Clark, and acted as U S envoy to tribes during the War of 1812, ultimately dying in St. Louis in 1820.
