A mass meeting gathered last night at the county courthouse to organize a Primary Election Repeal Club aimed at a statewide repeal of primary laws. J. E. Monroe presided, with Democrats and Republicans hopeful for reform, and a May Helena state meeting planned to propel county chapters.
The Boston Mont ana corporation filed a five million dollar mortgage with Beaverhead county clerk John Baker. The deed of trust to New England Trust covers mining claims in Deer Lodge and Beaverhead counties and shares in Montana Southern Railway and Boston & Montana Milling and Power. The document lists 27 quartz lodes and 6 placer mines in Deer Lodge plus 38 quartz lodes in Beaverhead and notes a six percent convertible gold bond first mortgage. Additional filings are expected in other counties.
G N Lorentz of Union Pacific placed contracts for railway ties in town. Ties will be shipped to Pocatello treating plant and used on Union Pacific lines. Big Hole basin timber could yield a million ties annually, potentially profitable for the county. A B Swartz and J W Stanton from Beaverhead National Forest Service survey tie stands. Mrs Hugh Fleming visited Dell yesterday.
Dillon Rod and Gun Club members enjoyed a spring Sunday shoot with four 15 bird events, one 20 bird, one 25 bird, and a five-pair double event. Bill Keller tied Fred Dart at 50 with handicap and won in a shoot off. Roy Forrester captured the Dillon cup by hitting 24 of 25 targets. Hi Brundage and C C Thornton tied 24 of 25 with Brundage winning from the 23 yard line in a shoot off.
Bud Hartwig and George Melton earned second honors in the doubles at the state handball tournament in Helena. Hartwig and partner won silver medals and returned to Dillon after traveling from Butte, where Mrs. Hartwig joined him for the trip.
The May term of court in the fifth judicial district opens May 8 with fourteen civil cases and one criminal case, Bert Leduc for grand larceny. The calendar lists dates and parties for cases from May 8 to May 25, plus the first jurors summoned and the page note continued on Page Eight.
The first sale of the season will be held Saturday afternoon at the Sullivan Sale yards near the courthouse. A large consignment includes about a hundred head of cattle work horses saddle horses milch cows hogs and many farm implements and household goods. The auctioneer is Hammer Smith and Bert Williams serves as clerk.
Construction on the Normal College dining hall is progressing rapidly with blasting in frozen ground for the basement. Second story work has begun and completion is hoped by June 1080 to serve the summer session. The $50,000 building will feature dining rooms, sanitary kitchens, a bakery, large storage with ice plant, and expanded commissary facilities.
The Normal college hosts a spring event featuring Wesleyan college Helena Male Glee Club. Fifteen members perform concert singing vocal and piano solos and quartet pieces with a touch of college comedy. May 1 is the date.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Kemper and Miss Lucy Kemper spent last Friday in Dillon for business and social visits. They are visiting Montana from Brooklyn New York where they have lived the past few years.
Arthur Conger spends the week in Dillon and travels to Sheridan where his wife Mrs. Conger joins the return trip due to her mother's illness.
The Dillon Rotary Club was organized with 25 charter members led by Senator Frank Hazelbaker as president and Frank Eliel as vice president. Charter night is set for Friday May 5 with Rotarians statewide and city business leaders invited. committees include entertainment and invitations led by local civic figures.
Beaverhead county commissioners met April 5 1922 in Dillon with Chairman Shaw and Commissioners Gosman and Anderson present. They postponed the W A Sewall road report to May and adopted a fence contract with the Oregon Short Line railroad while approving a county fair fence clause. They approved a Ford runabout for the surveyor, set hearings for road districts in June, and adjourned to April 4 then April 5 for further sessions to handle tax opinions and road repairs.
Dr R R Rathbone and Mrs Rathbone spent Saturday evening in Butte as he attended a Bagdad temple session where he serves as Illustrious Potentate. In Lima last Monday arrest noted for a man named Jack Frazier serving six months in county jail for gambling law violations.
