Senator Henry L. Myers announced he will not seek re election and will return to Montana to re establish himself in the practice of law after his term ends March 4. He thanked supporters and recalled nearly a decade of service to Montana and its people while stressing fidelity to constituents over politics.
John J. Baker Beaverhead county clerk and recorder announced last Saturday his intention to again seek the Republican nomination for clerk and recorder. He is the first in the county to file a notice of intention for the upcoming primary, signaling the start of candidacy filings and prompting others to consider runs.
A fire believed incendiary badly damaged the George Engineering company offices and destroyed maps drawings tracings and equipment. Estimated damage near 2000 with no insurance. Earlier vandalized offices had been ransacked with plans left in the middle of the floor. Elder suspects the same persons behind both acts.
The Montana Auto Supply repair site is rising fast after a fire. Brick and cement work is finished and new additions create a tall, attractive block. A stucco front and a vast plate glass display room will feature prominently. Occupancy hoped for by month’s start.
Bids for letting of the Barrett hospital construction contract in Dillon will be received on May 10 after an earlier April 29 date was extended. Work will start as soon as the contract is awarded.
The speaker recalls unwavering backing of a wartime leader from start to finish and continued support for postwar aims including joining the League of Nations. Since President Harding's induction, party divisions arose over administration measures, which the speaker voted to uphold when aligned with national interests.
Bea verhead Angler's club received a crate of thirty five Hungarian partridges last Thursday morning and released them at Louis Anderson's ranch beside the site of a previous pheasant release. Shipped from Czecho Slovakia via the state game commission, the birds quickly took to a nearby field and began feeding. They are expected to thrive and propagate rapidly, as they naturally pair and were released in matched pairs.
The Dillon baseball commission selected four captains George Gosman Bob Barrett W D Ross and Hiram Brands age and formed teams the Gophers Badgers Beavers and Bunnies with mascots Eddie OBrien Hess Brundage Leonard Schultz and Ray Gimble as staff. Opening date not set but likely mid to late month and preparations move forward with fields improved for twilight games and no Sunday games initially.
T. E. Ashworth a Bannack pioneer died there last Thursday evening from heart trouble. Funeral Sunday at Bannack with burial in the old timers' burying ground. He resided in Bannack over thirty years working as a miner and prospector and is survived by three sons Ray George James two daughters Mrs Elsie Mc Mannis and Annie, two brothers William and George, and one sister Mrs Martha Thompson.
The charter night for the newly organized Dillon Rotary Club, scheduled for Friday, has been postponed with no new date set. The entertainment committee is preparing elaborate plans for the event, hoped to be a red letter day in Dillon’s history.
Beaverhead National Forest awarded a contract last Thursday to A B Miller Company to cut 100000 ties in the Wise River area. The company will begin work immediately, loading the ties at Divide for distribution to Union Pacific branches.
The board of county commissioners met in regular session last Monday afternoon to conduct Beaverhead county affairs over the next three days.
Paul Stahl, 18, faced district court last Wednesday afternoon before Judge J. C. Smith for violating state prohibition laws by selling moonshine whiskey. He pled guilty and appeared for sentencing Friday morning, when he was fined 160 dollars, a payment he made. A notable turnout of women attended the trial.
The executive committee met at the State Bank of Dillon to discuss launching a proposed Beaverhead county chamber of commerce. It was agreed Dillon would support a civic group, but weather and business conditions were unsuitable to start now, so the campaign is postponed until fall.
The annual Catholic field day will be held on June 8 at Dilimont park. The first big annual outing was held last year and was a big success, prompting the St. Rose guild to make the picnic an annual event. The ladies are busy preparing the program of events, promising more interest than last year.
George Brown was tried before a Lima jury last Monday evening on failing to provide for his wife. He was found guilty and fined 25 dollars in Judge Hanson’s court.
Irion arrived at the Cook Sheep ranch yesterday and delivered pelts totaling five grown coyotes and fifty four coyote pups, for which he collected the bounty.
A large crowd attended a musical recital Thursday evening at the Normal college auditorium. Mrs. Margaret Tello, music instructor, performed with Mrs. Elmo Jacquette Scott, Dillon’s leading vocalist, delivering a memorable and exceptional program.
The first weekly Dillon Rotary luncheon convened at Andrus grill with nearly all charter members present. Fayette Cannon, special representative of District Governor Davis, attended and the session was well received. The club will meet each Wednesday at noon to discuss civic topics and support community enterprises.
The Music Department will present a student recital Friday evening May 12 1922 featuring a varied program. Performances include selections from Faust Gounod Murmuring Brook Salute a Pesth duet Gypsy Trail and other pieces by Barbour Hirschman Wiggers Godard Sullivan and more. The Girls and Boys Quartettes Vocal and piano numbers mark the event with ensemble and solo performances.
Beaverhead County High School selects Green Stockings as this year’s class play. The three act production, directed by Miss Josephine Numbers, will be performed in the high school gym on May 17 for one night only.
John G. Brown as counsel for Bert Hughes filed an affidavit with the district court clerk stating the defendant cannot have a fair impartial trial before Judge Carroll due to bias and prejudice. The filing notes claims the judge is biased.
Bruce E. Milliken former principal of Butte City High School will teach psychology at the Dillon Normal College summer session. He is regarded as a leading educator in the region and accepted after an approach by President Davis. Additional prominent instructors will join the staff. full list to be published next week.
The Gregory String Orchestra travels to Sheridan for a concert tied to Sheridan high school's commencement. Soloists Dan Henneberry Joe Sprinkle Wm Dunn Jr and a violin quartet piece are on the program with Miss Fedora Morton accompanying and performing a costumed interpretative dance. The May 8 season closer at Training School auditorium begins 8 30 pm and is free to the public.
T. E. Gilbert the county prosecuting attorney filed his notice to run in the August primaries for the Republican nomination as county attorney. He is the second candidate to enter the race in the county.
At a regular American Legion meeting a Memorial Day program was approved with a committee of Howard Morse Lee Mc Crackin Frank Jones Frank Ashworth and George Baker. It will be religious and patriotic with clergy organizations and schools invited to participate. The day includes a morning procession and afternoon graves of heroes from three wars decorated. Citizens are urged to stay home and join the exercises.
