Local Pilots Ushered In The Jet Age
Forty years ago jet noise filled the air as Col. John Kropenick helped transition WWII pilots from propeller aircraft to the P-80, the Army Air Corps first jet. Williams Field Arizona hosted the Aerojets, the first jet aerobatic team, while three original members and a widow now live in the Fort Walton Beach area. The Aerojets trained, performed weekends, and returned to teaching Monday, aiming to mirror the Thunderbirds by representing the Air Force with low fast flyovers that thrilled large crowds.
